Troll, Roemhildt: Cantatas, Sacred Music In Thuringia
The album Cantatas: Sacred Music in Thuringia unveils the sacred soundscape of Lutheran Thuringia around 1700, reconstructed from the celebrated 1968 discovery in the church of Grossfahner, where a corpus of some three hundred cantatas had lain concealed. The sacred works of Fr. Troll and Johann Theodor Roemhildt, here issued in world premiere recordings, stand alongside the Concerto a flauto concertante preserved in a copy by Pisendel and the organ chorales of Johann Gottfried Walther and Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, Handels teacher. Spanning the liturgical cycle from Christmas to Easter, trumpets, timpani, tenor and bass solo, together with the period instruments of I Contrappuntisti, restore the learned yet devotional profile of central German musica poetica within the Bach orbit.
