Charles Calomiris: Gethsemane, Opera In 1 Act
Set in the stillness of Gethsemane. This one-act opera by Charles Calomiris focuses on the hour before the arrest: a liminal space between sacred oratorio and theatre. The libretto threads prayer, doubt and temptation - disciples drifting to sleep, Satans taunts, the solace of an angelic choir, the Fathers reply. From Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani to Climb upon your Cross, each scene converges on one idea: sacrificial love as a radical human lesson. With an international cast and the Cathedral Choir of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the work becomes a contemporary meditation on choice, courage and redemption, casting new light on Holy Week through a stark, compelling dramaturgy.
