We all work hard, each doing our best, but we are constantly haunted by the feeling that things could be better. More recognition at work, children doing better at school, wives being friendlier, husbands being tidier, better figures. Life could run more smoothly, everything could shine a little brighter. The television actress wants a role that shows her in a better light, as does the clerk in the environmental department. Things could work out better at the cosmetic surgeon's, and even the homeless man is working to improve his situation: he treats himself to a new newspaper above the ventilation shaft. The cardinal wants to become pope and the pope wants to retire. That's what it's all about: we all deserve better. Our lives should be brighter: more glamour.
