Gustav Mahler - Lieder
At every place Gustav Mahler visited during his eventful life, he fell passionately in love with a young woman time and time again. The Songs of a Wayfarer, Des Knaben Wunderhorn and his First Symphony were all inspired by women. Angelika Kirchschlager also has a special connection to Mahler. As an acclaimed lieder singer, she is a welcome guest on the worlds major concert stages, and the works of Gustav Mahler are among her constant companions. Mahler has been with me since my student days. The Rheinlegendchen was my first Mahler song. This was followed by the Songs of a Wayfarer, which, incidentally, were the very first songs I ever sang with an orchestra. Mahler is often sung in a very reverent, highly glorified and meticulously rehearsed manner.
