Gemmo, Armaroli: Duo & Solo
The album Duo & Solo unfolds as a refined laboratory of sonorities and forms, in which baroque violin and double bass confront one another as two mirror-like scripts, poised between written page and performative gesture, historical memory and present invention. In Francesca Gemmos Towards the Circle a single core of material generates, on the one hand, a monologue for solo violin and, on the other, a two-part fabric in which the double bass moves as an improvising heterophonic shadow around the notated line. After Towards the Circle gathers these resonances into a solo for double bass, while Sergio Armarolis Bicinium plus x reimagines the didactic and contrapuntal tradition of the bicinium, entrusting the low part with an open variable. The programme thus posits listening to itself as a compositional act and allows sound, tuned to a lowered pitch, to expand, grow rarefied and slowly sediment in time.
