19th Century Russian Chamber Music
This Da Vinci Classics album features works by several of the most important among the Russian composers of the late 19th century, three of whom were members of the "Mighty Five" (Cui, Borodin, and Rimsky-Korsakov), together with Cajkovskij and Taneev. The works recorded here are scored for a variety of different ensembles, which display the full palette of the luxuriant and gorgeous sonorities of fin-de-siècle Czarist Russia. There are some early and rather forgotten gems from Cajkovskijs youthful years, along with the favourite Suite from The Nutcracker; there are miniatures for cello and strings by Cui and Borodin, along with the highly developed Canzona for clarinet and strings by Taneev. The album is capped by the majestic Fuga (Chorale and Variations) by Rimsky-Korsakov, whose title, In the Cloister, suggests fascinating and spiritually intense atmospheres.
