Herzogenberg, Brahms, Bruch: Cello Sonatas

The programme forms a triptych of late German Romanticism around the cello and Robert Hausmann, dedicatee or catalyst of all three works. In Heinrich von Herzogenbergs Cello Sonata No. 3 op. 94, the classical inheritance lives in a measured dialogue of proportion, counterpoint, and song. With Brahmss Cello Sonata No. 2 op. 99, chamber form assumes near-symphonic breadth: interval and rhythm generate an architecture in which ardour and melancholy interpenetrate. Max Bruchs Kol Nidrei op. 47 finally leads song towards Jewish liturgical memory, transforming the cello into a praying voice poised between supplication and consolation. Hausmann unites these paths in one musical civilisation, where friendship, dedication, and formal thought endow sound with moral gravity and enduring resonance.
