Mozart: The Flute Quartets
The album The Flute Quartets by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, featuring the flute of Rita DArcangelo and members of the Polish String Quartet Berlin, situates itself at the very centre of eighteenth-century chamber culture, between Mannheim, Paris, Munich and Vienna, along and beyond the journey of 1777-78. The five quartets KV 285, KV 285a, KV Anh. 171, KV 298 and KV 370 reveal a flute no longer confined to ornamental display, but a fully enfranchised partner in an Enlightenment art of conversation, where salon poise, miniature theatre and refined timbral enquiry converge. From the nocturnal Adagio in B minor of KV 285 to the playful realm of variations in KV 298 and the quasi-concertante profile of KV 370, the programme emerges as a miniature chamber novel on time, instrumental song and cultivated sociability.
