Young Fresh Fellows
Bocetos De Espana (dyc)
A MUSICAL NOTE FROM THE YOUNG FRESH FELLOWS... The day has finally arrived when we can pay full tribute to the country that embraced us, at least way back in the good old rock & roll '90s. To be sure, we still embrace España right back. For years we'd been concocting and stock-piling a full record of songs dedicated to Spain. its many regions, and our glorious adventures there. And this April, the 14th & 15th to be exact, we staggered in disarray into Crackle & Pop, the Seattle studio where Johnny Sangster keeps the fire burning with Conrad Uno's historic STAX/EGG board and countless recent fantastic records by Mudhoney, Tripwires, Minus 5, etc. Some of the lyrics had been scribbled in the bars and vans around Spain (with notebooks from 2013 especially fruitful). Others we "had not yet bothered to write" -- some of those came out best! Let's see... "The Basque Stallion" is an heroic ode to mystical rock warrior Xabi, done in inimitable Dictators style. "Inquisition" presents a rapidfire barrage of questions, to which the answer is always obvious. We memorialize people and places in ballad form: "La Via Lactea" / "Casa Parrondo/Templo Del Gato" / "Club Wah Wah/Club Loco" / "Gora Euskadi" / "Barcelona Rag"... And then there are the heartfelt stream-of-consciousness bangers: "El Tenedor En Mi Corazón" / "To Die In Spain" not to mention "Sing For El Cid", a sort of Ballad-of-Mott-update but much less intelligible.
