En Masse
Consisting of the band's first self-release tape (only a limited amount were made) and the first 'proper' release, a 4-track EP originally on the Dining Out label. Neither had a title for some reason. This does. En Masse is the name of an early track that was never recorded (for legal reasons). (It's about fishing/not fishing). The tape has 9 tracks covering politics I Think About It/50 Yard Dash/Anti-CWOF (we still are), emotions Harmonics of Passion/Johnny on the Pathetic (this IS a love song) and, of course, nonsense Double 'A' Initials/MVOB2, leaving Gatenby ('baby, it's just instrumental') and 19 seconds of Egypt ('we did all we could within the constraints of time and money'). The EP was far 'looser', partly improvised, with the addition of some trumpet and saxophone. Only 3 tracks were recorded, I Can't Remember being a dub version of For the Life of Me another sort of love/life song as is J. Have, plus another instrumental, Thirty Purple Birds, whose title came from a nonsense poem by.I can't remember. Both were recorded at a local (Portsmouth-ish) studio called Toucan in 1981. 'Pompey punk/funk/what? for less than the price of a lot'. Should not be lost to the world.
