Radio Days

Off The Record

For more than two decades, Radio Days have treated the perfect chorus as both instinct and obsession. Since forming in Milan in 2003, the band have quietly built one of European power pop's most enduring catalogues, distilling the melody of The Beatles, the urgency of punk and the sharp economy of late-'70s pop into something unmistakably their own. Off The Record, their fth album, feels like the sound of that pursuit reaching cruising altitude. Across ten tightly wound songs, Radio Days strip everything back to its essentials. The tempos are faster, the arrangements leaner and the hooks sharper than ever. Keith Moon-style drum lls crash into restless bass lines, glam-avoured guitar riffs and the band's trademark harmonies, creating a record that rarely pauses for breath but never loses sight of melody. There is a sense of momentum running through the album. "I Won't Give Up" opens with handclaps and a declaration of intent. "Flying High", the rst song written for the sessions, captures the bittersweet pull of loving someone who can make you touch the sky and hit the ground in the same breath, its shuffle groove echoing the spirit of Nick Lowe's "So It Goes". "One Heart One Love" raises the pulse still further, delivering perhaps the album's most immediate rush. Musically, Off The Record inhabits that fertile ground where '60s melody, late-'70s power pop and the warm rush of '90s guitar pop converge. From The Records and Big Star to Teenage Fanclub and early Weezer, the record ultimately reconnects with the modern jangly power pop renaissance spearheaded by bands like The Lemon Twigs and Uni Boys. Rather than looking backwards, Radio Days sound like part of a lineage that keeps renewing itself with every generation. There is no grand concept behind Off The Record. Just ten songs, rarely overstaying their welcome, built around a belief that Radio Days have spent twenty years rening: somewhere out there, another perfect chorus is still waiting to be found. For Fans of: The Rubinoos, The Knack, Paul Collins Beat, Nick Lowe, Teenage Fanclub, Weezer, The Records, Uni Boys.
