Klezmatics, The
We Were Made For These Times
With "We Were Made For These Times," the Klezmatics celebrate their 40th anniversaryand simultaneously release an album that directly addresses the present. For four decades, the Grammy Award-winning group has combined Yiddish musical tradition with political awareness, cultural responsibility, and a distinctive sound that fuses klezmer with punk energy, jazz improvisation, gospel, and global rhythms. The new album understands klezmer not as a nostalgic archive, but as a living form of expression that fosters strength, connection, and resilience. In times of social tension, global migration, and public debates about belonging, the Klezmatics focus on the historical mission of Jewish music: to demand humanity, strengthen community, and articulate hope. The songs range from protest and workers' songs to spiritual pieces, while simultaneously celebrating the joy of life, faith, and cultural memory. Lyrics by Woody Guthrie, Holly Near, Dovid Edelstadt, and Chaim Zhitlovsky meet new interpretations and international guestsincluding Sofía Rei, Janis Siegel, Joshua Nelson, La Manga, William Parker, James Brandon Lewis, and Enver Izmaylov. At its heart is the title track, inspired by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Esté's message: We are made for these times. The album reaffirms what the Klezmatics have stood for for 40 years: music as a tool for courage, dignity, and a shared future.
