American jazz tenor saxophonist and occasional flute player Joe Henderson had a lengthy musical career spanning more than four decades. Henderson played with many of the leading American players of his day and recorded for several prominent labels, including Blue Note, Milestone, Contemporary Records and Verve. A chain smoker, Henderson died in San Francisco, California, on June 30, 2001, after a long battle with emphysema.
