Head On Stone is the alter ego of Nele Janssen, the frontwoman of the Flemish rock band Peuk. In that band, she screams her lungs out while pulling and wrenching at her guitar strings as if her life depended on it, but the contrast with Head On Stone could hardly be greater. Seated on a small stool, Nele gently plucks at the piano while singing the most melancholic melodies. If there's anything that connects the two projects, it's the raw, honest emotions and pure musicality that immediately catch the ear. The heavenly piano riffs sometimes recall ethereal works like those of Debussy or Satie, while the lyrics are anything but easy to digest. Pain can sometimes be very beautiful, and Nele proves it with this record. Stony Beds by Head On Stone is a gripping, intimate debut from an artist of whom we have already heard and seen muchbut certainly not everything.
