Perhaps ,The Invention of Colour" is this years mostcontradictory record, both in terms of design and culturalconnotations. First comes the disc, with its colorful title, in a very modest colored cover. Second, it is made by a Brazilian, with the easy associations with crackling percussion and exuberant dancing, but the singer/songwriter Tigana Santana is quite the opposite. Reviewers sometimes have the habit to, timely and untimely, draw parallels to Nick Drake when writing about any soft-spoken artist who is also an original and talented guitarist, but in Santanas case, it is actually the most appropriate comparison. Even Santana veiled voice has traits of the English songwriters subdued voice. A more diffuse, but not for that sake an irrelevant association, is Terry Callier when he is in his most meditative state.Tigana Santana is unusual even in a different way. He sings inseveral African and European languages which undoubtedlycontributes to the musics emotional coloring. But again, its not ostentatious palette he offers; the music rather goes in hazy and warm colors. I say beige, not meaning dull, I say brown meaning the soft cozy brown. Saturated red, in thin strings. Colors that do not intrude, but to bring a devoutly calm.

Technical perfection is not paramount on "Guitar Sounds". The focus is on spontaneity, improvisation-if the result is flawed in the classic sense of the word, this concerns him not one iota. Dresselhaus is interested in atmosphere, in the intensity and magic of the initial moment when decisions are made and played without knowing which direction they will take or where they might end-music without a safety net, so to speak.

The Scortilla were formed in 1979, influenced by DEVO, punk and early wave bands.They only 'hit' was Fahrenheit 451, released on major label in 1984. Architects of live act with a great sound and visual impact have played around Italy to the hideouts of the underground music by establishing their headquarters at the Psycho Club of Genoa, the cradle of true art rock scene of that period. Intransigent about their artistic choices, the band closed their career after the only vinyl release. This anthology collects the recordings ofthe first period of the band, absolutely amazing material. Tracks like "Military rendez-vous", "Chanson de non amour", "Dresden", "Climax", "ADA", "Mirror Dance", "Inside" and also their 'hit Fahrenheit 451, published by the WEA in the summer of 1984, are on this vinyl. For all those that consider Gaznevada and italian 'new wave' at the same level of euro stuff, this is a record that consume up to pulverize! Absolute masterpiece!

In the late 1980s and early 90s it could sometimes seem the women singers of Mali reigned supreme. In particular it was those of the Wassoulou region, an area in the south of Mali renowned for its music and strongly linked to the birth of the blues, whose voices were heard. In 1991 Sterns released their ground-breaking compilation 'The Wassoulou Sound - Women Of Mali' and World Circuit picked up the 200,000+ seller in West Africa, 'Moussoulou' by Oumou Sangare. Dinba (or Djeneba, as it was then and still sometimes is, spelt) Seck had to wait a few more years before her first release in the West but the wait, at least for her listeners, was worth it: a key track on vol. 2 of 'The Wassoulou Sound' and one that had become a nationwide hit in Mali as a pro-democracy anthem. As reviewed in The Wire: "There is so much humour, spirituality, and sheer gutsy energy ... If you haven't already let the Wassoulou women into your life, then now's the time."

The Swiss Electro-Trio SLEEPWALK is the guarantee that Bernin Switzerland not only has to offer tranquility and numberedaccounts. After being founded by Bruno Ruch and Oliver Spring in 1992 SLEEPWALK published the fi rst two tapes ,Synthetic Force ,and ,Suffer in Silence" before, in April 1994, the first MCD ,Immortal Disease" was published by the Swiss label Rising Records.This was followed by the debut album ,Door To Insomnia , (1996/Khazad-Dum) and the MCD ,Hypnotize" (1998/Khazad-Dum), which laid the foundation stone for SLEEPWALKs growing popularity. The second album ,Black Diagnose" (Scanner) is fi rmly committed to the strategy afrom the legs into the head ,, although Sleepwalk can shine through even modest and subtile shades, and a good dose of playfulness and humor.The long -standing collaborationbetween Bruno and Oliver Ruch Spring ended in 2005 after therelease of ,Rapid Eye Movement" (Scanner). SLEEPWALK was then reformed as trio with Andreas Lehmann and Roland Ruch. First sign of life after the restart was the EP ,Revenge Of TheLost"published in 2009. Now available in a limited edition.
