Many people play roots music, but few modern musicians live those roots like Minnesota's Charlie Parr. Recording since the earliest days of the 21st century, Parr's heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals don't strive for authenticity: They are authentic. It's the music of a self-taught guitarist and banjo player who grew up without a TV but with his dad's recordings of America's musical founding fathers, including Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. With his long scraggly hair, father-time beard, thrift-store workingman's flannel and jeans, and emphatic, throaty voice, Parr looks and sounds like he would have fit right into Harry Smith's "Anthology of American Folk Music." Parr's forthcoming album, Barnswallow will be his eleventh studio release. Most of his recordings, including Roustabout (2008), Jubilee (2007), Rooster (2005), King Earl (2004), 1922 (2002) and Criminals and Sinners (2001) eschew typical studio settings. His inspiration is drawn from the alternately fertile and frozen soil of Minnesota. Parr grew up in the Hormel company city of Austin, Minnesota (population 25,000) where most of the world's favorite tinned meat, Spam, is still manufactured. And he hasn't moved far, drawing sustenance from the surprisingly large, thriving and mutually supportive music scene of Duluth.Barnswallow features ten songs-eight original and two traditional-and was recorded live to tape at the Winona Arts Center. Charlie's longtime collaborator, Tom Herbers of Third Ear Studios in Minneapolis, engineered and mastered the project; and the cover art was done by Winona, MN based artist Jamie Harper. The third chapter in the 2013 series dedicated to the great music composed by M Piero Piccioni is based on a peculiar film: the horror-documentary movie IL DEMONIO, directed in 1964 by Brunello Rondi and starring Daliah Lavi and Frank Wolff.A film inspired by real events that happened in the south of Italy, it tells the story of a scorned woman who seeks to avenge on her ex-lover with a spell, after which the townspeople accuse her of being possessed by the devil.The directorial style fluctuates between horror and documentary, and the story inspired a particular artistic approach from the composer who, once again, had the opportunity to set free his immense creative skill. The result is a score that was not typical for Piccioni-dissonant, compact, suspense-oriented music that trespasses into experimentation, giving the movie the powerful effect of a wide-eyed, waking nightmare. A fundamental piece in fully understanding the multidirectional evolution of the Maestros art, IL DEMONIO is a highly restless and sleepless score that provides further evidence of the talent of Piero-still standing strong against the hard test of time. The CD is released in a jewel case and mastered by Claudio Fuiano for 73 minutes of listening pleasure, with 14 cues in mono and 3 in stereo. Graphic design by Daniele De Gemini and Alessio Iannuzzi and liner notes by Andrea Morandi (CIAK magazine) on the music, the movie and the actor Frank Wolff.

Originally out in 1982 in a very limited vinyl edition including a postcard, the eponymous album was recorded live in 1979 at Hearts, North Carlton, supporting the Boys Next Door. Often described as the Australian Screamers, Primitive Calculators was one of the few Aussie bands to mix minimal synth bass, scratchy guitars, repetitive drum machine beats that reminds their Californian cousins but also Cabaret Voltaire. This impossibly hard to find item is now available on vinyl for the first time since 1982 and this first pressing includes an exact replica of the sleeve, black vinyl with black labels and postcard.

He had thought their music it was too negative, too Zionist, and totally against his everyday experience. Returning to Israel to Jamaica I locked myself in my one-room home away from home in the hills above St. Ann's Bay, in the Lime Hall community, and with the revolutionary spirit of Marcus Garvey blowing through the green lush fruit trees I sat with my guitar and arranged my West Bank songs into these 8 tracks. The Purrs understand that personal battles are won with rocknroll, optimism from release, and that these stories are meant to be shared. They "grab a table in the back, and start throwing them down." The Purrs engage in multiple harmony vocals (from Jima, also on bass, and Jason Milne and Liz Herrin, also on guitars), which allows them to drift from aggressive to sultry, and lonely and down and out to unified and hopeful. The dual guitars organically drift from punk to country to shoegaze, aided by a strong rhythm section (Craig Keller on drums). The Boy With Astronaut Eyes is peppered with longing,desperation, coos and howls; The Purrs brand of rock and roll devotionals are something that is never tiresome.
