1 - BAKER, CHET - CHET - (LP)
DOXY

Every musician has his area of expertise and for Chet Baker that area was the ballad. Therefore, this album dedicated entirely to ballads, gives listeners a chance to hear Baker doing what he does best.and when Chet Baker does what he does best, he does it better than any other trumpet player in the history of jazz. For this session, recorded on 30 December 1958 at NYCs Reeves Sound Studios, the poster child of West Coast cool jazz (who had just turned 29) assembled a superlative East Coast sextet that featured the unusual front-line combination of flute (Herbie Mann), trumpet (Baker) and baritone (Pepper Adams), departing occasionally from this format, however, to showcase the guitar playing of Kenny Burrell. Pianist Bill Evans, Philly Joe Jones (drums), Paul Chambers (bass), all well-known for their association with Miles Davis, and all some of the top names in jazz are also featured here, along with drummer Connie Kay of the Modern Jazz Quartet. This album represents some of the last studio work Baker did before emigrating permanently to Europe. It also includes one of Bakers own compositions, "Early Morning Mood", recorded at the same studio and with the same line-up on 19 January 1959, as a bonus track.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Alone Together 02. How High The Moon 03. It Never Entered My Mind 04. Tis Autumn 05. If You Could See Me Now 06. September Song 07. Youd Be So Nice To Come Home To 08. Time On My Hands 09. You And The Night And The Music 10. Early Morning Good

2 - BAKER, CHET - CHET BAKER IN NEW YORK - (LP)
DOXY

For much of the 1950s the so-called "East Coast" vs. "West Coast" debate raged on in modern jazz circles. Such arguments were not halted by this 1958 album, but it did give listeners some food for thought, for here Chet Baker, one of the stars of "cool jazz", gets together with some of the most representative members of the East Coasts "hard bop" school. On three long tracks Chet teams up with Johnny Griffin, one of the most talented tenors of his day (associated largely with Thelonious Monk and Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers) as well as a stand-out rhythm section featuring pianist Al Haig, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. This all-star rhythm section trio drives Chet through tunes like Miles Davis "Solar", and adds texture and lift to ballads like "Blue Thoughts" and "Polka Dots" and "Moonbeams", creating an album unlike any other Chet had recorded before.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Fair Weather 02. Polka Dots And Moonbeams 03. Hotel 49 04. Solar 05. Blue Thoughts 06. When Lights Are Low

3 - BAKER, CHET - SINGS AND PLAYS WITH BUD SHANK, RUSS FREEMAN - (LP)
DOXY

By 1954, a trumpet-slinging white boy who looked like James Dean had climbed to the very pinnacle of the West Coast jazz scene, winning that year's most prestigious poll for "best jazz trumpet player" and national acclaim for his first vocal album, Chet Baker Sings. The album was wildly successful and his label, Pacific Jazz, quickly put jazz music's new darling back into the studio for a follow-up. The resulting album, 1955s Sings And Plays With Bud Shank, Russ Freeman And Strings, was recorded at Capitol Studios in L.A. over the course two sessions. For the first session Baker brought in a large string session, as well as Bud Shank (later of "California Dreamin" fame) on flute, Red Mitchell on bass, and long-time cohort Russ Freeman on piano, but for the second session Baker brought in only Freeman, Carson Smith (bass) and Bob Neal (drums). Interestingly, it is this second, more intimate session that produced the best results, with songs like "Lets Get Lost", "Just Friends" and "Long Ago And Far Away" becoming signature tunes for Baker for the rest of his career.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Let's Get Lost 02. This Is Always 03. Long Ago And Far Away 04. Someone To Watch Over Me 05. Just Friends 06. I Wish I Knew 07. Daybreak 08. You Don't Know What Love Is 09. Grey December 10. I Remember You

6 - BEATLES, THE - THE DECCA TAPES - (L+C)
DOXY

180 gram LP + bonus CD of the album. "Guitar groups are on their way out", was what the biggest fool in rock & roll history wrote to Brian Epstein when he REJECTED the Beatles after listening to this audition tape, recorded at Decca Studios on New Years Day, 1962. Although the boys (with Pete Best on drums) were admittedly still finding their footing here, and the three Lennon-McCartney originals may be no match for "Love Me Do" (recorded just 10 months later), these 15 songs still have all the makings of a band whose stardom would soon obscure the sun.

7 - BERNSTEIN, ELMER - THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM - (LP)
DOXY

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score, Elmer Bernsteins original soundtrack to Otto Premingers 1955 film, The Man With The Golden Arm, starring Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Parker and Kim Novak, became the first all-jazz soundtrack to be used in a major Hollywood movie. Bernsteins music was the perfect emotional match for Premingers heroin-addict/jazz drummer anti-hero (played by Sinatra), and is considered one of the best scores of the era. It is also credited with effectively changing the sound of American cinema by opening the floodgates for jazz music in film and on television. Bernstein himself would go on to score over 200 films, including The Ten Commandments and To Kill A Mockingbird.

8 - BERRY, CHUCK - AFTER SCHOOL SESSION - (L+C)
DOXY

The name Chuck Berry and rock & roll are synonyms. Without Chuck Berry, there would be no rock & roll. So to call Chuck Berrys debut LP "seminal" is a bit of an understatement. This album, originally released on the fledgling Chess Records in 1957, was Chuck Berrys first long playing album (after a slew of hit singles), and only the second ever for the label. Chuck Berry got Chess to sign him by playing a demo of, none other than "Maybellene".and the book of Genesis in the Bible of rock & roll was written. 180 gram LP + bonus CD of the album.

9 - BLAKEY, ART -& THE JAZZ MESSENGERS- - ART BLAKEY!!!!JAZZ MESSENGERS!!!! - (LP)
DOXY

By the time this album was released in 1961, Art Blakey (now 40 years old) was working with a very prolific line-up featuring "Jazz Messengers" Wayne Shorter (who would soon become the musical director of the group) on tenor sax, Jymie Merritt on bass, Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano. Trombone star Curtis Fuller, brought in especially for this album (and featured on his own composition "Alamode"), soon became a working member of the Messengers as well. Interestingly, this flawless LP, featuring a superb version of "Invitation" (a tune taken from the score to A Life of Her own, a 1950 movie starring Lana Turner) and "Gee Baby, Aint I Good To You" (a hit for Nat King Cole in 1944) is one of the very few Blakey recorded for Impulse!

10 - BLAND, BOBBY "BLUE" - TWO STEPS FROM THE BLUES - (LP)
DOXY

180 gram LP. Originally released in 1961, blues singer Bobby "Blue" Blands legendary Two Steps From The Blues has been repeatedly called "one of the best blues albums of all time", and Bland one of the genres greatest singers (and top sex symbols in his day), no small feat in a genre so crowded with amazing talent. Throughout 60s and 70s Bland placed over 50 songs on the R&B charts, including "I Pity The Fool", which shot to No. 1 and "Turn On Your Love Light", a song that shaped the history of both R&B and rock & roll. Bland got his start singing in the early fifties as a member of a loosely knit group of musicians that included Junior Parker, Johnny Ace and B.B. King that formed around Memphis famed Beale Street. Together these giants forged the new sound of Memphis blues, a sound that would carry both blues and R&B into the next millennium. 11 - BROONZY, BIG BILL - AN EVENING WITH BIG BILL BROONZY - (LP)
DOXY

180 gram LP. Chicago blues pioneer Big Bill Broonzy spent much of the 1950s (up until his death in 1958) touring and recording in Europe, where he was revered as a living legend of the blues able to make a decent living from his music, after decades of financial hardship. Recorded live at Copenhagens "Club Montmartre" on 4 May 1956, this rare LP is one of the few remaining live recordings of Broonzy from this period. While the track selection of standard blues numbers is typical of his European performances, Broonzy was always a crowd pleaser and tried to play the songs each individual audience wanted to hear, never letting his ego get in the way and, thereby, winning the hearts of fans everywhere! Liner notes by one of the founding fathers of British Blues, Alexis Korner.

During this period, Byrd-who was then perhaps the finest living hard bop trumpeter-had begun concentrating his efforts on a quintet formed with baritone sax player Pepper Adams. Featuring Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, the quintet was most notable however, for introducing a 21-year-old Herbie Hancock to the jazz world, in his first ever recorded session! The album also features Hancocks first recorded composition, "Requiem". Hancock's first session as leader would not appear until the following year with 1962s Takin Off.

DOXY

180 gram 2LP + booklet. Recorded live at Town Hall, NYC in May of 1958, this historic concert (organized by Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg) was a retrospective of Cages work from 1934 to the present. Here Cages interest in technology, Eastern philosophies, and the concept of "silence" and "chance" as related to composition come to the fore as he plays some of his most significant and controversial pieces of his career, several of which ("Six Short Inventions for Seven Instruments", "She Is Asleep", "Music for Carillon", and "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra" [in which Merce Cunningham took the part of the conductor - the "living clock" - and David Tudor that of the pianist]), were performed here for the first time ever. This concert created quite a stir for its time, with many journalists and audience members loudly complaining "this isnt music"! Includes booklet with comments by Cage himself.

17 - CAGE, JOHN -& DAVID TUDOR- - INDETERMINACY - (LP)
DOXY

180 gram gatefold 2LP. Originally issued as in 1959 on Smithsonian Folkways, the initial idea for Indeterminacy came from avant-garde pianist, David Tudor, who suggested that John Cage give a lecture that was simply the telling of stories. Cage did this in Brussels in September 1958. For this lecture Cage simply stood in front of an audience and told 30 stories without musical accompaniment. Upon returning to the States in 1959, Cage decided to record the stories, but this time with the musical accompaniment of David Tudor. For the recording the two men were placed in different studios where they could not hear each other, while Tudor performed portions of Cages "Concert for Piano and Orchestra" (1957-58) along with pre-recorded selections of Cages "Fontana Mix" (Milan, 1958), and Cage simultaneously told 90 one-minute stories (sped up or slowed down according to the storys length). In a career that spanned over half a century, this album is considered to be one of Cages best. It has never been reissued on LP until now. Includes liner notes by John Cage.

18 - CANNONBALL ADDERLY WITH MILT JACKSON - THINGS ARE GETTING BETTER - (LP)
DOXY

All-star session recorded in NYC in the autumn of 1958, led by Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, and Milt Jackson on vibes. The rhythm section is also no less noteworthy with Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. This date represents an interesting and successful juxtaposition of the two sides of jazz at the time, with Adderley coming from the more improvisational and swinging side of downtown jazz and Jackson coming from the more cerebral side of jazz as 'high art'. But despite hailing from different sides of the scene, both men are considered venerable "practitioners of the blues" and this is perhaps the tie that binds these men together on this memorable date. The group plays a range of tunes including two of Adderley's own compositions: the title track "Things Are Getting Better" and "Sounds For Sid" (dedicated to a favorite disc jockey of the time). Jackson also contributes one of his own themes with the original "Blues Oriental", which leads off the disc. They also play Dizzy's bop-era classic "Groovin' High", while Adderley presents his own modern take on "The Sidewalks of New York". An important meeting of top shelf jazz musicians in a critical year in jazz history.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Blues Oriental (milt Jackson) 02. Things Are Getting Better (julian Adderley) 03. Serves Me Right (budd Johnson) 04. Groovin High (dizzie Gillespie) 05. The Sidewalks Of New York (lawlor-blake/arr. 19 - CARDEW, CORNELIUS - WE SING FOR THE FUTURE & THALMANN.. - (LP)
DOXY

180 gram HQ virgin vinyl LP - ltd. numbered edition - 500 copies. Recorded in 2002 by American contemporary composer and pianist, Frederic Rzewski, We Sing For The Future & Thalmann Variations are two compositions from English composer Cornelius Cardews Marxist-influenced 'Peoples Liberation Music' period. Rzewski came to prominence in the mid-sixties in Rome as a founding member of the MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva) improvisation group (along with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum), which shared a vision with groups like Cornelius Cardews Scratch Orchestra of the same period. However, like Cardew, in the 1970s Rzewski also became interested in Communism and the power of music to express the will of the people, so it is fitting that Rzewski should chose to revisit these two compositions. 1974s "Thalmann Variations" was written to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Ernst Thalmann, the Secretary General of the German Communist Party, and is based on a popular German Workers Movement song (1934s "Thalmann Song"), while "We Sing For the Future" is a solo piano piece meant to convey the struggle of young people in an imperialist world. It was written in 1981, the year Cardew - who by this time was an active member of the Communist Party - was mysteriously killed in a hit and run accident in London.

180 gram LP + bonus CD of the album (first time ever on CD). Originally released on Columbia Records, Johnny Cashs 11th album, The Lure of the Grand Canyon, was unlike anything he had ever done before. 30 - CHARLES, RAY - RAY CHARLES - (LP)
DOXY

180 gram LP + innersleeve with lyrics. Perhaps the greatest crossover artist that ever was, it is impossible to overstate the impact that Ray Charles had on the evolution of both R&B and rock & roll. Charles distinctive style transcended genres and influenced musicians from every musical background and from every corner of the globe, but it was during the mid-fifties that Charles really began to rule the R&B charts. His legendary debut LP-originally released in 1957 (and later renamed Hallelujah! I Love Her So) for Atlantic-was essentially a collection of those hit singles. In 1955 Ray had his first number one hit, "Ive Got A Woman", followed by his second and third number 1 hits, "A Fool For You", and "Drown In My Own Tears", over just the next few months. Almost all of the remaining tracks on the album were also Top Ten hits from that same period, including "Greenbacks", "Hallelujah I Love Her So" and "This Little Girl Of Mine". This was undoubtedly the era that defined the legend.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Ain't That Love 02. Drown In My Own Tears 03. Come Back Baby 04. Sinner's Prayer 05. Funny (but I Still Love You) 06. Losing Hand 07. A Fool For You 08. Hallelujah I Love Her So 09. Mess Around 10. This Little Girl Of Mine 11. Mary Ann 12. Greenbacks 13. Don't You Know 14. I Got A Woman
