After 14 years of close collaboration Tony Allen stopped working with Fela Anikulapo Kuti. After breaking from the band during the gigs at Berlin's festival in 1978, Tony Allen returned to Lagos to start working on new compositions. His independence inspired him to break-away from his regular routine of putting 2 tracks on every single album. The tracks on No Discrimination are also focussed more towards subjects of tolerance, brotherhood and peace. This was his final work during the 70's, after which he started to move beyond the border of Nigeria by collaborating with artists worldwide. Till this day he remains on of the greatest kit drummers alive. Part of the Tony Allen reissue series on Kindred Spirits, featuring remastered versions and original restored artwork. 1978 was without a doubt one of the most disturbing years in the history of Fela and the Afrika 70. Just a year before the army had raided Fela's compound destroying his house, his club, his brothers free medical clinic and fatally injuring his mother. With their houses destroyed they had to squat the former Decca offices. Somewhere in between the madness they managed to record Fela's Suffering and Schmiling album and Tony Allen's third solo-project: 'No Accomodation For Lagos'. Without a doubt his most political orientated record of all. After the record came out Tony Allen dropped from the Afrika '70 band as he felt that too many people were sapping Fela of his creative mind.

available again! A beautiful and politically conscious Brazilian record that was originally released in the US only by Monitor Records (1968). It's master tapes were archived at Smithsonian Folkways institute in the US, where it was later re-issued on CD. This is the first time this music has been made available worldwide on vinyl. The album presents twelve songs depicting life in Brazil during the late 60's. Where many songs of the time stick to the more clich; beautiful seas, romantic skies, flowers and love affairs, 'Songs of Protest' represents another side of the song writing from the region. Like the original, the cover features descriptions of the lyrics for each song (handy for the non Portuguese speaking among us!). These 'protest songs' by the young composers of the time were meant as messages the people and shows turning point in the evolution of the Brazilian song.

A rather peculiar youngster with a unexplainable love for flora and fauna. Mitchel spent most of his in the zoo or the local forests armed with a pair of binoculars, searching the atmosphere for rare species. His parents noticed this special interest for mother nature and donated him a parrot that goes by the name of Roberto. While playing Roberto music drenched in samples of birds Mitchel got inspired by the combination of nature + music, and started to make music of his own. Over the past 2 years, Jameszoo was steadily building his music path and along the way he stumbled upon alot of amazing Brazilian records. His fascination for this musical genre ultimately led to the descision of creating an ode to Brazilian music in the form of a full album. Moving slightly away from the afro-beat blueprint that characterized last years self-titled debut LP, the nine-piece have added Gamelan tones and studio effects to their afro-funk template, as well as exploring otherparts of Africa like Malis desert soul and djembe rhythms from Senegal. The album is laid out by a group who clearly understand live dynamics, building the tension of the first half of the LP with the tight riffs of Togetherness, the mix of west-coast organ and plaintive horns of 2 Days Before 2012 and Gallowstreet 34, which could easily soundtrack the 70s edition of GTA Addis Ababa. Mid-way through the album also points to an interesting path, the drum-less ambience of Night Fight, a duel of thumb pianos and slide guitar, awash with studio eff ects, evoking fireflies and glow worms amid the nocturnal jungle creatures. In the second half, tracks like Ethiopino, The Past Is History and Marsvin represent what Jungle By Night do best - taut, multi-layered grooves that are perfect for dancing to, or any other nocturnal activity you like to indulge in.

But perhaps the biggest highlight of the last year was playing with members of Fela Kuti's classic Egypt 80 band in the Parisien afrobeat mecca L'Alimentation Generale. Their performance prompted Fela's percussionist Chief Udoh Essiet to describe the boys "the revelation on of afrobeat."The album reveals the many sides of Jungle By Night, from Barretto -inspired claps and clave fused with Abyssinian horns, to lazy 3/4 funk and Tijuana brass, to stretched-out modal afrobeat - all done in their own inimitable way.
