Louisianas BeauSoleil has been the very heartbeat of Cajun music and culture, keeping it vital through not only their attention to tradition, but also through passionate and inventive experimentation. On LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULER (Cajun slang for LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL) the ensemble finds freshness not by infusing vintage styles with contemporary sonics but with vibrant, thoughtful fusions. Preserving traditional Cajun music remains their focus, yet leader Michael Doucet keeps its lifeblood circulating here by selectively absorbing contemporary and other sounds compatible with the band's repertoire. That move accentuates a fact many know but some prefer to ignore: Traditional roots styles never remained static. Now in its 37th year, BeauSoleill manages to shine as both a dance band and a concert act. "We realized we could reach a new audience," Doucet said. "We'd been playing for Cajun dancers and your folk music types, but when we played these performing arts centers, we had a more diverse audience, so we wanted our music to be more diverse. We wanted to sound like a Cajun band on stuff that wasn't the usual Cajun band material. We had to work at it, but the effort paid off. Even though we're still pegged as a Cajun dance band today, people are surprised when they hear what we can do." On this special edition combo CD & DVD package, Beausoleill performs to a small living room audience in their hometown. BeauSoleil is doing what Cajun musicians have always done: theyre listening to the radio in their heads and turning it into new Cajun music. "It was a magical night," Michael says.

Mike Bruce is best remembered as the guitarist, keyboard player and backing vocalist for the original Alice Cooper group. Alice Cooper was originally a band consisting of Furnier on vocals and harmonica, lead guitarist Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce on rhythm guitar, Dennis Dunaway on bass guitar, and drummer Neal Smith. The original Alice Cooper band broke into the international music mainstream with the 1971 hit "I'm Eighteen" from the album Love it to Death, which was followed by the even bigger single "School's Out" in 1972. The band reached their commercial peak with the 1973 album Billion Dollar Babies. With a stage show that featured guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors and baby dolls, Cooper has drawn equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock to pioneer a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal that was designed to shock Bruce wrote or co-wrote many of the hit songs with some or all of the other members of the band. This anthology features tracks and outtakes from Michaels only official solo release, IN MY OWN WAY, unreleased tracks and live tracks never available in North America.

In its original vinyl incarnation, this album has long been an elusive and quite expensive commodity, a highly admirable 1970 attempt by prolific producer Allen Toussaint to re-launch the once-thriving recording career of Crescent City mainstay Ernie K-Doe that's been known until now primarily to serious New Orleans R&B aficionados. But a curious chain of events unfolded near the close of 2007 that underscores the uncanny impact of television advertising. The British drug store chain Boots plucked the LP's lead track, the delightfully funky Toussaint-penned concoction "Here Come The Girls," as background music for a clever Christmas commercial, igniting a U.K. sensation. Interest in the song and the album that spawned it spiked, and the Internet grapevine was abuzz with inquiries on how to secure a copy of either one. Now we have the debut CD release of that long-lost LP, available for the first time in 35 years along with 2 bonus tracks including an alternate version of Ernie's best-known hit, 'Mother-In-Law'!

King Curtis and his bubbling, stutter-style tenor sax playing brought a touch of jazz and a whole ton of R&B to countless rock & roll tracks in the early '60s, and his funky edge is one of the reasons records by the Coasters, for instance, continue to sound good 40 years later. Curtis recorded for a variety of labels during his career, including stints at Capitol and Atlantic, but what is arguably his finest session came for Bobby Robinson's Harlem-based label Enjoy Records in 1962. King Curtis never officially "joined" Bobby Robinson's Enjoy label, rather, he came aboard only provisionally, willing to cut a couple of sides and see if they hit, and once they did, he would sign. Robinson ran the session for "Soul Twist" and the record became Curtis's first hit, and an album followed. Robinson managed to convince Curtis not to blow the house down every second of every track, and the ensemble feel that emerged between the saxophonist and organ player Ernie Hayes and guitarists Billy Butler and Joe Richardson is strong, loose, and darn near perfect. Curtis was a more versatile musician than many people realize (he did sessions with artists as varied as Lonnie Donegan and Andy Williams, and shows it here by going sans sax, playing a solid electric guitar and handling the vocals on a two-part version of the Ray Charles classic "What'd I Say." This collection kicks off with his first hit, "Soul Twist," and its B-side, "Twisting Time." Curtis shows himself right at home in Memphis soul territory, too, with the Booker T. & the MG's-styled "Hot Potato (Piping Hot)." The haunting and slightly ominous instrumental "Midnight Blue" is another highlight included here. Soul Time makes for a fine introduction to this extraordinary musician.
