I was born in Sweden in 1956. Picked up my father's old guitar and tried to learn how to play when I was 11 years old. Learning mostly from records. In my midteens I started freelance-writing about music for various magazines and newspapers. Around 1977 I discovered that I could scrape a living performing the kind of music that I had loved since I was a kid. The first six years I sang for the cinema-queues on the streets of Paris. Pretty cold during the winters but the money was often really good. I busked all over Europe down to North Africa and spent some time in New York City. Moved back to Sweden, raised a little family and all of a sudden got lots of gigs, playing festivals, clubs, pubs, radio, TV, concerts, crummy joints and other unlikely places all over Scandinavia. I made a few recordings, movie-soundtracks and the odd tour of Europe. A couple of divorces, illnesses, recovery, poverty and lots of good times later I was put in the studio to make this CD. It s a sort of a document of things that I have picked up along this over 30 year journey. Mostly I stick to my free interpretations of the blues. But while recording live in the studio a few other things slipped in there too; an African piece that sounds a bit like Mississippi John Hurt, a couple of improvised instrumentals, jazz tunes, and all kinds of music are related anyway."

The debut album by Norwegian singer/songwriter Hege was produced by the amazing Fats Kaplan in the Athletic Sound Studio in Halden, Norway.--My mother told me I started to sing when I was two years old, says Hege Brynildsen, singer and songwriter from Halden, right on the border between Norway and Sweden.--She taught me the old folk songs and I sang them at Sunday School every week. A new song every week.She grew up in a musical home. Her father, Tor Brynildsen, was one of the first rock 'n' roll singers in Norway in the late 50's and her mother loved country music. When Hege was 17 she made her first recording, a duet with her father. They sang "Loving Arms" by Kris Kristoffersons . Later on they also recorded "The Gambler", written by Don Schlitz and a hit for Kenny Rogers i 1978.--I've always loved good songs. It doesn't really matter what kind of music it is. My favorite songwriters are Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Warren Zevon and Nick Cave, I always go back to those guys --About ten years ago I discovered bluegrass through the Dolly Partons album The Grass is Blue (1999) and Little Sparrow (2001). I loved the warm and authentic sound. Hege is convinced that a good album should have no more than ten songs. She spent a lot of time trimming the album down to perfection. Eight original songs and two covers: Amos Milburn's "Bad bad Whisky" and Geraint Watkin's beautiful "Only a Rose".The music can be descibed as a kind of gothic country, not that far away from the music of Gillian Welch or Iris DeMent.

The sextet clearly knows their milieu of Seventies folk rock, resurrecting the ghosts of the Band or Little Feet, with touches of the Grateful Dead, Crazy Horse, and Brothers both Allman and Flying Burrito. In other words, Deadman dives headfirst into the era and rather than try to really update it with any particular contemporary flourish, rightfully sticks with what works and simply raises it to their own exceptional level. The seven-minute jam of "If I Lay Down in the River" rolls with so much southern groove that it seems a complete anachronism, even shouting out to the Bands Cahoots with a chorus of "Life is a carousel , believe it or not. Life is carousel, two bits a shot." Likewise, the six-and-a-half minute "Love Will Guide You Home" slows the pace but doesnt let up on one bit on the fervent feel. This is music that almost forces your eyes closed and head to sway.

When the festival was cancelled, the musicians gathered together and agreed to do a free concert for the families and friends of the victims. Although he said he would, It seemed an impossible task. But when we performed the song to end the concert, Paal was amazing! When his voice met mine in thoughts of the children, I got such chills. Its a rare voice can make earth shattering changes to the psyche of the human spirit. Paals voice does that - like no other Ive ever heard. Paal and his brilliant keyboardist/ arranger, Goran Grini - along with guitarist John Platania (Van Morrison, Moondance, Domino) and I - recently returned from a small tour of the U.S. At the Norwegian Seamans Church of New York, at the Americana Music Festival in Nashville and at Mountain Stage in Minnesota (the most important live radio show in the U.S.) With massive silence mixed in with sparse, but magical tinklings of the piano and minimal, but vibey, John Platania guitar sounds .. Paals voice rang through those hollowed place and brought the house down every time. When Paal sang ANGEL OF THE MORNING at Mountain Stage, it sounded like he was floating high off the walls in St. Patricks Cathedral. It was a prayer.. certainly as beautiful as music as music can possibly be. When he finished, the 1,000 in attendance simultaneously jumped out of their seats and cheered without stopping for what seemed like 10 minutes. It was the most amazing reaction Ive ever seen.
