Inspired by the success of Mantovani and Jackie Gleason and their particular brands of easy listening music, David Miller came up with the concept of the 101 Strings, contracting a German radio orchestra to perform on his albums. After an initial release in 1957, the orchestra became not only the most popular but also the most prolific, turning out 24 albums in 1958 alone! Quantity had little effect on quality; each 101 Strings album effortlessly blends traditional material with especially composed numbers. As such, 101 Strings have long been considered the ultimate in exotica and lounge music.

The fourth UK hit album the 101 Strings were to enjoy, Down Drury Lane To Memory Lane proved to be the biggest album of their career. Featuring songs from shows as diverse as Mr Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Fanny, South Pacific and Showboat, among countless others, Down Drury Lane took just three weeks to hit the summit and would go on to register five weeks at the top of the charts. In all Down Dury Lane spent 21 weeks on the chart, with 16 of them inside the Top Ten. It also, bizarrely, proved to be their last major hit album for the next twenty years or so!

Record company mogul David Miller, who had played an integral role in the creation of Rock & Roll when he released the first Bill Haley & The Comets records, later turned his attentions to mood music. Inspired by the success of Mantovani and Jackie Gleason, among others, Miller contracted the Orchester des Nordwestdeutchen Hamburg (the Northwest German Radio Orchestra of Hamburg) and conducted by Wilhelm Stephan and had them record a series of mood music albums at an astonishing rate (some 24 albums were recorded and released in 1958 alone!). The124 piece string orchestra would score a number of hits on the album charts, with Gypsy Campfires being their first, a #9 hit in 1959.

Their signature routine was Whos on first, in which Abbott has organised a new baseball team and the players have nicknames that are confusing to Costello. Assembled from Joans nationwide tour of Autumn 1961 through to the Spring of 1962, Joan Baez In Concertshowcased the wide variety of material that Joan featured in her show, ranging from gospel (Gospel Ship), blues(Babe Im Gonna Leave You), message songs (What have They Done To The Rain) to African traditional (Kumbaya)through to Brazilian love songs (Ate Amanha, which is sung in Portuguese throughout).It was Joans version of Babe Im Gonna Leave You that brought the song to Led Zeppelins attention, althoughtheir version would end up entirely different from Joans!

Although offered a recording contract with the major label Columbia, Joan opted to sign with the independentVanguard label, ostensibly to retain artistic licence.Recorded over the course of four days in a ballroom of a hotel in New York, her debut album is noticeable for itssparseness, featuring little more than Joan on guitar and vocals, with some tracks featuring a second guitar.Released in November 1960, the album would finally chart in 1962 when her second album had begun to attractmajor interest, and would go on to attain gold status.
