Originally released on John Faheys Takoma Records in 1965, The Seal Of The Blue Lotus is the debut album from American guitar soli legend Robbie Basho. In college Basho immersed himself in the study of Asian art and culture, even changing his last name to that of the Japanese poet Matsuo Basho, and his music shows a much greater Eastern influence than contemporaries like John Fahey and Peter Lang. Basho was particularly entranced by the raga form which is apparent in classics like "Dravidian Sunday" from this album. A guitar soli masterwork.

Burning >From The Inside is the fourth release from this legendary British gothic rock outfit. Originally released in 1983, Burning From The Inside managed to succeed despite massive setbacks (before recording lead singer Peter Murphy was hospitalized with pneumonia) and features some of the strongest performances of the band's career, with inspired work from Murphy when he was able to return to recording, and the first lead vocal performances from bandmates Daniel Ash ("Slice Of Life") and David J ("Who Killed Mr. Moonlight"). Closer "Hope" is probably the greatest send-off possible for one of the most important bands of the late 70s/early 80s.

Unlike previous releases which contained mostly traditional songs with little or no accompaniment, this album features many self-penned numbers as well as a few contemporary covers with Briggs playing guitar and bouzouki. Briggs only released two albums and a handful of singles/EPs before retiring from the music business making this reissue an important document of the British folk revival.

180 gram gatefold LP. Cohen's fifth album (released by Warner Bros. in 1977) was produced and co-written by Phil Spector. The duo managed to write 15 songs in just three weeks together (at the time Spector exclaimed they had written "some great fuckin' music") but only 8 made the final cut of the album. The combination of Spector's famous Wall Of Sound, a general sense of loose fun in the studio and the unbridled sexuality and voyeurism of the lyrics certainly represents a big step forward. At the same time, Death Of A Ladies' Man both lyrically and stylistically is one of Cohen's career peaks, maybe even a masterpiece. Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsberg sang backup vocals on the chorus of the classic "Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On".

180 gram LP. Case History is the debut solo release from bluesy British singer-songwriter Kevin Coyne (originally released on John Peel's Dandelion label in 1972). Primarily just guitar and vocals, Case History is a powerful album from a very unique voice who was celebrated by folks as wide ranging as John Lydon, Sting, and the Mekons. Coyne, who passed away in 2004, spent much of the '60s working with the mentally disabled, and his songwriting is informed by a deep concern for the plight and mistreatment of those who have been tossed off by society. A bit of an outsider himself, he eschewed record industry pressure and maintained focus on his singular artistic vision. Another underappreciated classic.
