1 - BROEK, ZENO VAN DEN/GAGI PETROVIC - OB-LITERATE - (LP)
UNSOUNDS

SOUNDS OF THE YOUNG AVANT-GARDE VOL. 02. Gaudeamus foundation and the independent label Unsounds are indispensable actors in the avant-garde and new music field, operating internationally from their common base in the Netherlands. With the Sounds of the Young Avant-Garde Vinyl Collection, they collaborate to present some of the most forward moving sounds in contemporary music, as they are created today by young and mid-career makers. The works are original commissions by Gaudeamus and are selected, produced and released by Unsounds. This joint venture secures a new lease of life for these works apart from and beyond the live music stages, ensuring the most thrilling music of our day and age is preserved as veritable future classics. In the summer of 2014 Gaudeamus brought together audio-visual artist Zeno van den Broek (b. 1982) and composer Gagi Petrovic (b. 1986) and commissioned a large scale composition project. The electro-acoustic piece Ob-literate is the duo's resulting work for organ, vocal ensemble, electronics and custom built performative objects - world premiered at Nicolaikerk, Utrecht on 6 March 2016.Drawing inspiration from articles revolving around the philosophical text The Destructive Character by Walter Benjamin, furthermore distilling words and concepts from interpretations by Dick Raaijmakers and the poem tui by Adam Staley Groves, the two artists constructed a work which is intense and alienating in its deconstructive dismantling to create space for something altogether new.Starting out Ob-literate presents itself as a dense, intangible moving mass of sound. Little cracks offer a view to whats hidden beneath. Following an explosion, constituent elements are thrown wide, moving through separating paths - towards isolation. On their own all 'particules' find their equilibrium, without actively engaging in relations, although there might be some harmony or friction. A stray element deserts and the balance is rocked into implosion. High pressure forces connections, leading to collapse on itself. With the veil of obscurance lifted: the mark has been made, but damage was done by uncovering the underlying message and the disastrous disintegration is revealed. The storm of this exhilarating centrifugal composition throws up atomised memories of melodic syntax, hints of a phrase or just a word. In Ob-literate these tiny points reference musical coherence and terra firma in a buzzing rhizomatic web of contingent yet tightly controlled aural material. Ultimately Ob-literate blows holes in card houses of fixed ideas or walled-off bubbles - throws open windows and points to the clearest of blue skies as a tabula rasa for our cacophonous times.Liner notes by Sven Shlijper-Karssenberg

2 - HERETICS: ANNE-JAMES CHATON/ANDY MOOR - TOUT CE QUE JE SAIS - (CD)
UNSOUNDS

The duo Anne-James Chaton and Andy Moor has produced original works where poetry and guitar combine in explorations of thematic axes. With the project Heretics, of which Tout ce que je sais (All I know) is the second part, they revive the most obscure, violent, erotic passions, summoning the great figures of their personal mythologies. In the company of Caravaggio, Marquis de Sade, William Burroughs and figures such as Jose Mujica, the duo immerses the listener in another world history peopled by radical thinkers. Heretics pays homage to those heroes who have used transgression and excess as a necessary means for creation. In this new album, recorded live at the Carreau du Temple in Paris on the occasion of Peripherie du 35e Marche de la Poesie (2017), Anne-James Chaton and Andy Moor deliver a radical work at the confines of literary and musical creation.

4 - SLIGTER, JESSICA/WILBERT BULSINK - UNTITLED #2 (THE MUTE) - (LP)
UNSOUNDS

SOUNDS OF THE YOUNG AVANT-GARDE VOL. 01. Gaudeamus foundation and the independent label Unsounds are indispensable actors in the avant-garde and new music field, operating internationally from their common base in the Netherlands. The works are original commissions by Gaudeamus and are selected, produced and released by Unsounds. This joint venture secures a new lease of life for these works apart from and beyond the live music stages, ensuring the most thrilling music of our day and age is preserved as veritable future classics. The concept and title of Untitled #2 (The Mute) by Jessica Sligter and Wilbert Bulsink originate in a question: "When does what is muted begin to resonate?" Centering on the idea of voicelessness, The Mute explores a concept that can be investigated acoustically, but that can also be approached in social terms. How can those who have no voice in our society be heard?. The piece brings forth new ideas and connections around what the voice represents: a voice is like a home, a voice travels, a voice can be cancelled out or amplified by other sounds. It builds on a tense line bridging Bulsinks microtonal explorations and Sligters dark crooning tendencies - and it doesnt sound like a stretch at all.A commission by Gaudeamus, Untitled #2 (The Mute) had its premiere on 8 November 2016 at the November Music festival in Den Bosch (NL). The quartet has toured with this piece in Norway (Stavanger and Bergen) and The Netherlands (Utrecht at Le Guess Who? festival and Amsterdam) and it was recorded at the famous Athletic Sound Studio in Halden, Norway.Vocalist and composer Jessica Sligter (Berlin) works in the experimental end of the pop-spectrum, and has three albums in her name so far. One of the most exciting young composers in the Netherlands today, Wilbert Bulsink (Amsterdam) has written for a range of established ensembles such as Nieuw Ensemble, ASKO|Schoenberg and Quatuor Diotima. For their second collaborative work, the composers asked Spellemanspriswinners Kari Ronnekleiv and Ole-Henrik Moe to join the ensemble. Moe and Ronnekleiv are active as improvisation duo The Sheriffs of Nothingness and worked together with the Norwegian band Motorpsycho. With liner notes by Salome Voegelin.
