1 - AITKEN, LAUREL
- BOOGIE IN MY BONES - (LP) RUMBLE
More of the R&B and early Mento singles by the Godfather of Jamaican Ska. Chronicling his last 12 months before leaving the island in 1960, this collection includes his collaborations with legendary Jamaican producers such as Chris Blackwell and Duke Reid, confirming his calypso leanings, but also anticipating that pronounced guitar offbeat heralding the approach of Ska. Over the course of many years the man became a legend for Mods, Punks, Skinheads and 2Tone Fans all over the world, but his roots are here in his late 50s and early 60s production.

2 - AITKEN, LAUREL
- CALYPSO ROCK AND ROLL - (LP) RUMBLE
Unmissable singles collection documenting the early days of the man the world will always remember as the "Godfather of Ska". Born in Cuba in 1927 but raised in Jamaica, Laurel Aitken played an important role in the growth of the "Mento" music (indigenous Jamaican folk-based music, blending elements of European melody and African rhythm) phenomenon, while the Jamaican music industry was taking its first, hesitant steps back in 1958. Including such classics as the Day-O-influenced "Mass Charlie" or the pivotal "Calypso Rock n Roll", this is a must-have for anyone willing to know more on the origins of Rocksteady and Ska.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Mass Charlie (the Prisoners Song) 02. They Got It (ghana Independence) 03. Calypso Rock And Roll 04. Nightfall In Zion (aka Roll River Jordan) 05. Nebuchnezer 06. Sweet Chariot 07. 3 - BAKER, LAVERN
- LA VERN - (LP) RUMBLE
Coming at a time when jazz singing was slowly evolving into an erthier, more emotionally fervent style known as rhythm and blues, Lavern Baker's debut album on Atlantic, dated 1956, proved her to be one of the key vocalists who furthered that transition. The niece of legendary blues singer Memphis Minnie, Baker was blessed with a powerful, soul-tinged voice that she put to use as since his teens under the stage name 'Miss Sharecropper' and made her achieve a signing with Atlantic in 1953. Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, Lavern was one of the most successful R&B artists of her era.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Lots And Lots Of Love 02. Of Course I Do 03. You'll Be Crying 04. Miracles 05. I'm In A Crying Mood 06. Mine All Mine 07. Harbor Lights 08. I'll Never Be Free 09. Romance In The Dark 10. Everybody's Somebody's Fool 11. How Long Will It Be 12. Fool That I Am

4 - BAKER, LAVERN
- LA VERN BAKER - (LP) RUMBLE
Dolores Lavern Baker, responsible for a couple dozens of hits both in the R&B and the Pop Charts of the late 50's, proved capable of melding blues, jazz and R&B styles in a way that made possible the emergence of a new idiom: rock and roll. The first black artist to file a legal grievance against white artists who produced pop covers of their hits - she sued competing label MERCURY's recording artist Georgia Gibbs for covering her songs for the pop market, she lost that fight but it set an important precedent! - and of the first R&B acts to bring rock and roll to the Ed Sullivan Show opening the genre to a much wider audience, Lavern Baker is still considered one of the most remarkable female vocalists of her era, creating a sultry yet hard image that inspires female R&B singers to this day.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Jim Dandy 02. Tra La La 03. I Can't Love You Enough 04. Get Up Get Up (you Sleepy Head) 05. That's All I Need 06. Bop-ting-a-ling 07. Tweedle Dee 08. Still 09. Play It Fair 10. 5 - BELAFONTE, HARRY
- CALYPSO - (LP) RUMBLE
Originally released in 1956, Belafontes third album was the first full-length gramophone LPs to sell over one million copies, topping the charts for 31 weeks on the strength of hits like "Jamaica Farewell" and the immortal "Banana Boat (Day-O)". Mostly consisting of music written by the Trinidadian songwriter Lord Burgess, Calypso had an incredible impact on popular music of the 50s and 60s, bringing Caribbean rhythms to a wider audience and making Belafonte one of the most successful Caribbean-American pop stars in history. An absolute landmark in 50s American Pop Culture.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Day O 02. I Do Adore Her 03. Jamaica Farewell 04. Will His Love Be Like His Rum? 05. Dolly Dawn 06. Star O 07. The Jack-ass Song 08. Hosanna 09. Come Back Liza 10. Brown Skin Girl 11. Man Smart (woman Smarter)

6 - CHANTELS, THE
- WE ARE THE CHANTELS - (LP) RUMBLE
The first, and probably the greatest of all girl groups, the Chantels broke into recording in the late 50's, behind their lead singer Arlene Smith. They were, in fact, so early that the original version of this album, featuring a picture of the group on the cover, was soon withdrawn and repackaged with a picture of two white teenagers picking out a song from a jukebox. Originally released on the END record label in 1957, the Chantels debut consists of little more than both sides of their first six singles for the label, resulting in almost a greatest-hits package. Reissued here in its original (and highly hard to find!) "plantation girls" cover, this is probably the most seminal and influential record in the "all-female" chapter of rock and roll history.
TRACKLISTING: 01. He's Gone 02. If You Try 03. Whoever You Are 04. The Plea 05. Maybe. 06. Congratulations 07. Every Night 08. Sure Of Love 09. I Love You So 10. Come My Little Baby

7 - COASTERS, THE
- GREATEST HITS - (LP) RUMBLE
The Coasters second full album from 1959, and follow-up to their groundbreaking self titled debut, is more of a retrospective of their early singles, reviewing an incredible succession of hits. Slightly preceding the 'One by One' album where they switched to a more jazzy approach, this is pure sweaty West Coast R&B at its peak: "Poison Ivy", "Charlie Brown", Yakety Yak" are just a few unforgettable top-sellers from the band that most remarkably added the word 'fun' to the rock and roll dictionary.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Poison Ivy 02. Along Came Jones 03. Down In Mexico 04. The Shadow Knows 05. I'm A Hog For You. 06. Charlie Brown 07. Yakety Yak 08. Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart 09. That Is Rock & Roll 10. Young Blood 11. Sweet Georgia Brown 12. Searchin'

8 - COASTERS, THE
- ONE BY ONE - (LP) RUMBLE
The Coasters 1960 "meet-the-band" LP wherein the singers are presented not as a group but as individual soloists, represented a complete departure from what the Coasters rose to fame for. If the previous material was marked musically by its rock and roll teen-age based orientation and a by a deeply satirical approach to the lyrics, this album is notable for his musical maturity instead, with swingin, jazz-inspired arrangements brought by a full complement of musicians and an expensive production, resulting in a Coasters album that appealed not only to the youthful fan-base, but to adults of a more cultivated and advanced musical taste.
TRACKLISTING: 01. But Beautiful 02. Satin Doll 03. Gee Baby Aint I Good To You 04. Autumn Leaves 05. Youd Be So Nice To Come Home To 06. Moonlight In Vermont 07. Moonglow 08. Easy Living 09. 9 - COASTERS, THE
- THE COASTERS - (LP) RUMBLE
Like most of the early-era R&B LPs, the Coasters first album is more of an all-killer no-filler singles compilation than a proper debut. Covering four years and two distinct lineups, including a good portion of the period when the group was known as the Robins, and including 13 songs supplied by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (probably the most legendary team of composers of the whole rock and roll era!), The Coasters is one of the most fun and entertaining R&B vocal harmony records of its time, from one of the few bands in rock history to successfully straddle the thin line between music and comedy.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Searchin 02. One Kiss Led To Another 03. Brazil 04. Turtle Dovin 05. Smokey Joes Caf 06. Wrap It Up 07. Riot In Cell Block 9 08. Young Blood 09. Loop De Loop Mambo 10. One Kiss 11. I Must Be Dreamin 12. Lola 13. Framed 14. Down In Mexico.

10 - COCHRAN, EDDIE
- SINGIN' TO MY BABY - (LP) RUMBLE
140 gram LP. Singin To My Baby is Eddie "Summertime Blues" Cochrans first LP, originally released in 1958, just two years before he was tragically killed in a car accident (rockabilly king Gene Vincent was also in the car, but lived) at the age of 21, while touring the UK. Despite his early death, Cochran left a lasting mark on rock & roll history. The epitome of the fifties rebel rocker, and also, as music journalist Bruce Eder so rightfully put it, "rocks first high-energy guitar hero, the forerunner to Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page, Duane Allman and, at least in terms of dexterity, Jimi Hendrix". His influence was felt on everyone from the Beatles, to Blue Cheer, to the Sex Pistols (who covered Cochrans "Something Else"). Although "Summertime Blues" was his biggest hit, becoming an anthem for teen rebellion and disenchantment with the status quo, many of his songs were along this vein, making him a hero to generations of disgruntled teens.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Sittin In The Balcony 02. Completely Sweet 03. Undying Love 04. Im Alone Because I Love You 05. Lovin Time 06. Proud Of You 07. Am I Blue 08. Twenty Flight Rock 09. 11 - DARIN, BOBBY
- DARIN, BOBBY - (LP) RUMBLE
Often compared to Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin, Bobby was one of the greatest American singers. Born in the Bronx to a poor, working class family at the height of the great depression, Darins career took off in 1958 when he wrote and recorded "Splish Splash", as a result of a bet with radio DJ Murray "The K" Kaufman, who bet Darin that he could not write a song that started out with the words, "splish splash, I was takin' a bath", as suggested by Kaufman's mother. Though he later became an actor, a comedian and even a political folk singer of indisputable value, his 1958 debut remains an unprecedented classic in the history of rock and roll.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Splish Splash 02. Just In Case You Change Your Mind 03. Pretty Betty 04. Talk To Me Something 05. Judy, Don't Be Moody 06. (since You're Gone) I Can't Go On 07. 12 - DAWSON, RONNIE
- ROCKIN' BONES: THE LEGENDARY MASTER - (LP) RUMBLE
140 gram LP. There were hundreds of talented rockabilly singers in the 50's, but it'd be really hard not to recognize at first listen the high-pitched voice (back then it was actually difficult for radio listeners to tell if he was a man or a woman) and the pre-teen rock 'n' bop anger that typecast "The Blonde Bomber" as Ronnie Dawson was often referred to. He was actually in his teens when he got to write what is probably the best obscure rockabilly treasure of all time, that legendary "Rockin' Bones" hit, where Ronnie declares his wish to be buried with a stack of '45s and a phonograph. This collection features 24 singles and rare tracks (including many previously unreleased on vinyl!), spanning from 1957 to 1960: a must for any early rock and roll collector.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Rockin Bones 02. Congratulations To Me 03. Aint That A Kick In The Head 04. Hazel 05. Poor Little Johnny Smith 06. Pauline 07. Action Packed 08. I Make The Love 09. 13 - DIDDLEY, BO
- BO DIDDLEY - (LP) RUMBLE
The full-length debut by the man known as the Originator of rock and roll should need no introduction. Though never a top seller on par with his Chess Records rival Chuck Berry, Bo produced a catalog of classics to compete with all but a handful of the best early rockers, pushing rock and roll to its funkiest ever. The Bo Diddley beat-that "bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp" to which the pop-garage 1965 hit "I Want Candy" by the Strangeloves owes everything-is one of rock and rolls bedrock rhythms, showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Velvet Underground, and the Rolling Stones to name but a few. An all time classic that stretched back as far as Africa for its roots, and looked as far into the future as rap, while still remaining a milestone in the transition from blues to early rock and roll.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Bo Diddley 02. Im A Man 03. Bring It To Jerome 04. Before You Accuse Me 05. Hey Bo Diddley 06. Dearest Darling 07. Hush Your Mouth 08. Say Bossman 09. Diddley Daddy 10. Diddy Wah Diddy 11. Who Do You Love 12. Pretty Thing

His second 1959 long-play effort only adds a go to his classic debut, refining his trademark square guitar and crazy-distorted amplification to create new sounds (anticipating the innovations of 60s rock icons like Jimi Hendrix) and his rumba-sounding, hambone-styled Bo Diddley beat.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Crackin Up 02. Im Sorry 03. Bos Guitar 04. Willia And Lillie 05. You Dont Love Me (you Dont Care) 06. Say Man 07. The Great Grandfather 08. Oh Yeah 09. Dont Let It Go 10. Little Girl 11. Dearest Darling 12. The Clock Strikes Twelve

15 - DION & THE BELMONTS
- PRESENTING - (LP) RUMBLE
The seminal first album from Dion & The Belmonts, the epitome of Italian American doo-wop by a group of teenagers who got their start singing on street corners of the Bronx. Revealing a musical soul that transcended the limitations of teen pop (and foreshadowed group leader Dion Di Muccis future solo career) with immortal rock and roll hits like "I Wonder Why" or "Teenager in Love", still among some of the best examples of white vocal R&B to come out of New York in the 50s.
TRACKLISTING: 01. I Wonder Why 02. Teen Angel 03. Where Or When 04. You Better Not Do That 05. Just You 06. I Got The Blues 07. Dont Pity Me 08. A Teenager In Love 09. Wonderful Girl 10. A Funny Feeling 11. Ive Cried Before 12. Thats My Desire 13. No One Knows

Originally released in 1956 on the Imperial label and collecting both old and new chart-smashers, most of which were co-written with Dave Bartolomew, This is Fats Domino explains the legendary role Antoine Domino had, and still has, in New Orleans' popular culture. "Blueberry Hill", "Rockin' And Reeling", "The Fat Man's Hop"... this is the soundtrack to a trip to Bourbon Street. "Fats won't ever grow like a weed or be as tall as a building", they used to say in New Orleans, "but he's as strong as the Mississippi and he'll be around just as long".

17 - FABIAN
- HOLD THAT TIGER! - (LP) RUMBLE
Introduced into the music business by Frankie Avalon at a time when record producers were looking to the South Philadelphia neighborhoods in search of teenage talents with good looks, Fabian Forte mainly began singing as a way to support his family, due to his father's illness. Backed by songwriters Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, Fabian had soon released a series of hit singles on Chancellor Records, while his debut album Hold That Tiger! climbed to #5 on the US charts. Although never the greatest of singers (he would find greater success as an actor), during the late 50's Fabian was projected as something of a teen idol, helped by a string of hits and numerous appearances on American television.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Tiger Rag 02. Hold Me (in Your Arms) 03. Ooh, What You Do! 04. I Don't Know Why 05. Please Don't Stop 06. Lovesick 07. Gonna Get You 08. Love Me Love My Tiger 09. Don't You Think It's Time? 10. Just One More Time 11. Cuddle Up A Little Closer 12. Steady Date 13. Turn Me Loose

19 - GAYE, MARVIN
- THE SOULFUL MOODS OF... - (LP) CHANGEMENT RUMBLE
The very first album by one the greatest and most influential singers in the fields of Soul and R&B came out in 1961 on the Motown label and sees Marvin singing, playing drums, and piano on an album of mainly rearranged jazz and pop standards, inspired by his passion for Nat King Cole and Ray Charles. Though this is not Gaye with a fully developed style, and it is hardly the innovative legend of Let's Get It On or What's Going On this is still top notch jazzy-soul that reveals traces of what would soon become a legend. The studio musicians come up with nice arrangements of the material, sometimes even with hints of the punch they would bring to his later, chart-topping material. Though a little before Marvin got his 'groove on', this is still the first of four albums of jazz covers he recorded and an important look at the early days of the Motown-sound. ??

A true legend in his own way, the Louisiana born & bred Dale Hawkins is mostly known to the world for his all-time rockabilly classic "Suzie Q", as made famous by Creedence Clearwater Revival in their successfully revived, million-seller 1968 version. One of the very few white artists on the legendary Chess label, although often overlooked, Dale Hawkins's contributions are as valid as any of rock 'n' roll's founding fathers, and his 1958 Oh! Suzy Q debut is one of the best hidden rockabilly treasures of the fifties.

21 - HAWKINS, SCREAMIN' JAY
- AT HOME WITH... - (LP) RUMBLE
By far one of the most outrageous performers of the early years of rock, prone to emerging from coffins on stage, with a flaming skull named Henry as his constant companion, Screamin Jay was an insanely theatrical figure long before it was even remotely acceptable. His 1958 debut, At Home, featuring his legendary "I Put A Spell On You", along with surreal hits like "Hong Kong", "Take Me Back To The Boot And Saddle", or his wild-ass reinventions of old standards like "I Love Paris" and "Deep Purple", is a carefully arranged yet gritty, Ray Charles-gone-crazy styled, full band rhythm and blues masterpiece, filled with enough howls and groans to send chills down your spine.

A comprehensive collection of the early, pre-debut LP, singles from one of the most controversial frontmen of early rock and roll. Featuring his all-time classic "I Put A Spell On You" along with 15 hard to find classics from his Okeh Records days

24 - JACKSON, WANDA
- ROCKIN' WITH WANDA - (LP) RUMBLE
Equal parts straight rockabilly, hilarious late 50's camp, honky tonk, and country music, Wanda Jackson's Rockin' With Wanda, originally released on Capitol in 1960, helped her to establish her title, "the Queen Of Rockabilly". But Wanda's massive influence on defining the exact nature of early rock and roll music went far beyond her genre and her "heyday" during the '50s & '60s. For pure energy and rebelliousness, it compares favorably with the best of Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. On stage, Wanda wore tight silk dresses, red lipstick, and high heels. She wanted to add glamour and sex appeal to her image, and, man, did she ever! The female equivalent of Presley's leather suits and pelvic thrusting, she was the first woman to bring sex appeal to the rock and roll stage. In fact, she was so sexy, she wasn't allowed on stage at the Grand Ol' Opry until she covered her shoulders. If ever Elvis had a female counterpart, it'd be Wanda (she briefly dated Presley in 1955, so there you go). "Fujiyama Mama","Mean, Mean Man", "Don'a Wan'a" are just a few of the classic tunes contained in this remastered, virgin vinyl reissue of Wanda's absolute masterpiece.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Rock Your Baby 02. Fujiyama Mama 03. You're The One For Me 04. Did You Miss Me? 05. Cool Love. 06. Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad 07. Baby Loves Him 08. Mean Mean Man 09. You've Turned To A Stranger 10. Dona 'a Wan'a 11. I Gotta Know.

25 - JACKSON, WANDA
- THERE'S A PARTY GOING ON - (LP) RUMBLE
The first female singer of the early rock and roll era, Wanda was encouraged to try rock and roll by Elvis Presley himself. It was 1955 when Wanda met Elvis during the "Ozark Jubilee," a country tour through the south. She didn't think she had the voice for it, but he disagreed. He even recommended some songs for her. At first she was reluctant, but she signed a recording contract with Capitol and decided to give it a try. During the next few years, Wanda produced numerous examples of raw, prototypical rock & roll. The most distinctive aspect was her voice. She developed a wild, growling sound that at times sounds possessed or strangely alien, capable of going from sweet innocence to hellcat at the push of a button. Originally released in 1959 during the 'Queen of Rockabilly's' prime at Capitol Records, There's A Party Goin' On features a solid collection of songs in tune with the title track as well as covers of a handful of early rock hits such as "Tweedlee Dee" and "Kansas City." The set is highlighted by the staggering guitar playing of Roy Clark as exemplified on the standout cut "Hard Headed Woman."
TRACKLISTING: 01. There's A Party Goin' On 02. Lonely Weekends 03. Kansas City 04. Bye Bye Baby 05. Fallin' 06. Hard Headed Women 07. Tongue Tied 08. It Doesn't Matter Anymore 09. Tweedle Dee 10. Sparkling Brown Eyes 11. Lost Week End.

26 - JOHNSON, MARV
- MARVELOUS MARV JOHNSON - (LP) RUMBLE
Detroit gifted singer, songwriter and pianist Marv Johnson was a seminal figure in the early history of Motown Records. Responsible for more than a handful of hits between 1959 and 1960, he enjoyed no less than nine records in the top 100 as well as two songs on the top ten chart, after being chosen by the record producer Berry Gordy as the first artist to be released on his fledging record label TAMLA, in which Marv kept recording and working on sales and promotion until the late 70s. Often overlooked compared to the other great R&B stars of those years, Johnsons rich legacy includes dozens of brilliant soulful songs, like the immortal chart-smasher "You Got What It Takes" and the classic "Come To Me".
TRACKLISTING: 01. September In The Rain 02. You Got What It Takes 03. Summertime 04. Swonderful 05. I Cant Get Started 06. Come To Me 07. Let Me Love You 08. Almost Like Being In Love 09. Love Is Here To Stay 10. Im Coming Home 11. When I Fall In Love 12. Dont Leave Me

27 - KIDD, JOHNNY -& THE PIRATES-
- SHAKIN' ALL OVER - (LP) RUMBLE
It may be surprising that the Beatles were not the first British rock act to top the charts with one of their own compositions: that honor goes to Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, whose No. 1 "Shakin All Over" is also the first British-penned rock and roll hit to ever reach US top 20. Johnny, who wore an eye patch and calf length cowboy boots on stage to enhance his pirate image, was offered a contract by HMV in 1959 to record their first single, "Please Don't Touch", a song that 22 years later revisited the UK charts by heavy metal heroes Motorhead & Girlschool. Unfortunately, like many other labels of that era, EMI was never sure how best to deal with rock & roll success and though the group was among the finest rock combos of the early '60s, with a wild stage act that had them playing in pirate regalia, it never had enough consistent chart success to put it back in the top ranks of Britain's rock hierarchy, though they received a great deal of respect from the younger generation of rock & rollers. This LP collects all their early singles between 1959-1961, including all of Johnny Kidd's unforgettable hits.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Please Don't Touch 02. Growl 03. Steady Date 04. Feelin' 05. If You Were The Only Girl And I Were The Only Boy 06. You Got What It Takes 07. Yes Sir That's My Baby 08. Shakin' All Over 09. Restless 10. Magic Of Love 11. Linda Lu 12. Let's Talk About Us 13. Big Blon' Baby 14. Weep No More My Baby 15. More Of The Same.

28 - LEWIS, JERRY LEE
- GREATEST! - (LP) RUMBLE
Probably one of the most controversial and disputable artists of his generation, Jerry Lee jumped on the rock and roll wagon with more ego and talent than anyone and lived to tell the tale. Greatest! from 1961, Jerry Lees second album originally out for the Sun Label, features his all-time hit "Great Balls Of Fire" along with a number of rockin cuts, making this a terrific follow-up to his groundbreaking debut.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Money 02. As Long As I Live 03. Country Music Is Here To Stay 04. Frankie & Johnny 05. Home 06. Hello Hello Baby 07. Lets Talk About Us 08. Whatd I Say 09. Breakup 10. Great Balls Of Fire 11. Cold Cold Heart 12. Hello Josephine

30 - LITTLE EVA
- L-L-L-L-LOCO MOTION - (LP) CHANGEMENT RUMBLE
Perhaps no babysitter in history got a bigger break than Eva Narcissus Boyd, who babysat for songwriters Carole King and Gerry Goffin. It was early 1962 when they were inspired by a dance Little Eva was doing around the house and wrote a song called "The Locomotion". Originally meant for Dee Dee Sharp, returning home one day Carole and Gerry found their babysitter singing it. They liked what they heard, so they rushed her into the studio, with King doing the backing vocals. Little Eva was only sixteen when "The Locomotion" hit #1. Her salary as the Goffins' babysitter was $35 dollars a week. Her earnings from "The Locomotion" were reported to be around thirty thousand dollars. She appeared on television shows and in numerous magazines. She performed live in the U.S. and did several tours of England. Remembered by most as a one hit wonder Little Eva was more than that and her debut album on the DIMENSION label reveals one of the funniest yet talented artists of the "girl groups" era. Also features her second chart smasher "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby", later covered on stage by the Beatles.
TRACKLISTING: 01. The Loco-motion 02. Some Kind-a Wonderful 03. I Have A Love 04. Down Home 05. Breaking Up Is Hard To Do 06. Run To Her 07. Uptown 08. Where Do I Go? 09. Up On The Roof 10. Sharing You 11. He Is The Boy 12. Will You Love Me Tomorrow? 13. Keep Your Hands Off My Baby (bonus)
