Assembled from Joans nationwide tour of Autumn 1961 through to the Spring of 1962, Joan Baez In Concertshowcased the wide variety of material that Joan featured in her show, ranging from gospel (Gospel Ship), blues(Babe Im Gonna Leave You), message songs (What have They Done To The Rain) to African traditional (Kumbaya)through to Brazilian love songs (Ate Amanha, which is sung in Portuguese throughout).It was Joans version of Babe Im Gonna Leave You that brought the song to Led Zeppelins attention, althoughtheir version would end up entirely different from Joans!

Although offered a recording contract with the major label Columbia, Joan opted to sign with the independentVanguard label, ostensibly to retain artistic licence.Recorded over the course of four days in a ballroom of a hotel in New York, her debut album is noticeable for itssparseness, featuring little more than Joan on guitar and vocals, with some tracks featuring a second guitar.Released in November 1960, the album would finally chart in 1962 when her second album had begun to attractmajor interest, and would go on to attain gold status.

Joan Baez second album, released in September 1961, followed the same musical path as its predecessor, with the material almost exclusively traditional folk songs.Joan was accompanied by the Greenbriar Boys on two tracks; on the rest it was Joan on guitar and vocals.A commercial success, the album would peak at #13 on the US album charts, collect a gold disc for selling more than hal a million copies and pick up a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Performance.
