Bobby Darin was an American singer, songwriter, and actor of film and television. He performed in a range of music genres, including pop, rock, jazz, folk, and country. He recorded his own first million-seller "Splish Splash" in 1958. This was followed by "Dream Lover", "Mack the Knife", and "Beyond the Sea", which brought him world fame. All are present on this 4 CD set, along with all his other early hits.

Often compared to Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin, Bobby was one of the greatest American singers. Born in the Bronx to a poor, working class family at the height of the great depression, Darins career took off in 1958 when he wrote and recorded "Splish Splash", as a result of a bet with radio DJ Murray "The K" Kaufman, who bet Darin that he could not write a song that started out with the words, "splish splash, I was takin' a bath", as suggested by Kaufman's mother. Though he later became an actor, a comedian and even a political folk singer of indisputable value, his 1958 debut remains an unprecedented classic in the history of rock and roll.

The current vogue of taking songs from the American songbook, which has served Tony Bennett, Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow so well in recent years, is nothing new; Bobby Darin was doing it back in 1961. Love Swings tells the story of a relationship via twelve classic tracks, with the first six (which would have made up the original first side of the album) concerning the joys of being in a relationship and the second six detailing the downside. It is has been described as the most sophisticated album of Bobby Darins career and it is hard to disagree.

Im proud to say that I was on the Ray Charles bandwagon when it was just a baby-carriage; even before the firstalbum came out I was listening to his single releases.In fact, two singers - Fats Domino and Ray Charles - opened up my ears to a whole new world, different fromanything Id heard until then. They both became major influences when I realised these are the roots. BobbyDarins album therefore is no plain tribute album, rather a superbly crafted homage to an inspiration. We werenot trying to imitate, emulate or assume a position; we just wanted to get into the same groove, get the same feeling.To this end, The Blossoms, who worked with Charles during the 1950s, were brought in to assist on vocalbackgrounds.The end result is an experience comparable with the original, which says much for Darins own abilities.

Bobbys second album for the Atco label, Thats All was an album of standards, an idea that was put forward by his friend and publicist Harriet Wassler. That the idea proved to be a success is beyond doubt; Mack The Knife was a transatlantic chart topper and won the 1959 Grammy Award for Record of the Year (the same year Bobby was named Best New Artist) and enabled Bobby to become one of the few artists to bridge the gap between teenage singles buyers and their album buying parents.The album was a major chjart success too, hitting #7 in the US and the top twenty in the UK.

Largely recorded in May 1959, with four tracks to round off the album being completed in September, This Is Darin was Bobbys third album for Atlantic and released in the US at the tail end of 1959. Its UK release came some three months later and made #4 on the UK charts, thus surpassing its performance in America. It established Bobby Darin as a major player on the album market, with subsequent recordings also finding considerable success.
