Although Johnny Cash had departed Sun Records for Columbia in 1958, the tracks he had recorded for Sun continued to provide Sam Phillips with plenty of material for release. Whilst neither of his first two Sun albums had made a dent in the charts, they had performed sufficiently well enough to earn him a big money move to Columbia, who in turn had been rewarded when The Fabulous Johnny Cash lived up to its title and made the Top Twenty. In response Sam Phillips gathered together the six singles Johnny had released on the label and padded the album out with a further six tracks to produce the twelve track Greatest!

Officially the second album by Johnny Cash, Sings The Songs was originally released in November 1958, although the actual tracks dated back to 1956. Of the twelve tracks on the album, no fewer than ten appeared on the Billboard Country charts, including There You Go, Ballad Of A Teenage Queen and Guess Things Happen That Way which topped the chart. Indeed, only one track out of the ten failed to make the Top Ten, a remarkable return rate.

Although Johnny Cash was undoubtedly Sun Records biggest selling artist by 1957 (Elvis Presley had already left thelabel to sign with RCA Records) and was the first Sun artist to release an album, his relationship with Sam Phillips was already showing signs of strain. Phillips pre-occupation with Jerry Lee Lewis led Johnny to reason that the pastures might be greener elsewhere, prompting a switch to Columbia Records in 1958. The lucrative contract on offer was undoubtedly an important factor, but the access to much better promotion and therefore increased sales made the switch inevitable. His debut album for Columbia, The Fabulous Johnny Cash, was released at much the same time as the lead single Dont Take Your Guns To Town, with the former becoming a Top 20 album and the latter a Top 40 single. Originally released on Columbia Records, Johnny Cashs 11th album, The Lure of the Grand Canyon, was unlike anything he had ever done before. Most significantly, it was not even an album of Cashs music, rather a concept album consisting primarily of American composer Ferde Grofs Grand Canyon Suite. Cash gives his tribute to Grof in the conclusive track, an 11-minute spoken word piece about a day at the Canyon.
