HALLMARK
In 1959, songwriter Dorsey Burnette offered the song Tall Oak Tree to Ricky Nelson, who turned it down. Dorsey then recorded his own version, which was released on the Era label and scored a #23 hit, the first of the Burnette brothers to have appeared on the chart. Whilst several other labels Dorsey had recorded for in the past when through their vaults looking for material, it was Era that scored a follow-up hit, this time with Hey Little One. Whilst Dorsey would later find considerable success within the country music market, these early recordings hint at the rockabilly with which he started his career.

Considered a contemporary of Elvis Presley, performing a similar brand of fiery rockabilly. However, whilst Elviswas made a major priority at Sun and then RCA, Johnny found many of his early releases buried.A move to the main Liberty label in 1959 brought deserved reward, with Youre Sixteen becoming a Top Ten hiton both sides of the Atlantic.Further success followed, although Johnny was briefly hospitalised with a ruptured appendix which prevented himgoing out on the promotional trail.

A founding member of The Rock & Roll Trio with his brother Dorsey and family friend Paul Burlison, Johnny Burnetteachieved greater success during his all too brief solo career.The trio originally formed in 1952 as the Rhythm Rangers, although by the end of the decade the brothers werepursuing a joint career as songwriters (most notably for Ricky Nelson) and individual careers as soloists. Whilst neither of his first two Sun albums had made a dent in the charts, they had performed sufficiently well enough to earn him a big money move to Columbia, who in turn had been rewarded when The Fabulous Johnny Cash lived up to its title and made the Top Twenty. In response Sam Phillips gathered together the six singles Johnny had released on the label and padded the album out with a further six tracks to produce the twelve track Greatest!

Eugene Dixon was a member of The Dukays, a five piece vocal group that recorded a number of sides for NatRecords, including Nite Owl that was released and became a sizeable R&B hit in 1961.The producers of that hit had also been shopping the other recorded tracks around the industry, finally finding abuyer for Duke Of Earl with Vee-Jay Records. Duke Of Earl was duly released as a solo single by Gene Chandler,the name Dixon would now adopt as his professional stage name.As the single tore its way up the charts (it would finally spend three weeks at number one), Chandler took towearing a cape, monocle, top hat and a cane and adopting the Duke of Earl persona. Quick to capitalise on thesingle success, Vee-Jay released the Duke Of Earl album, featuring both the solo Gene Chandler tracks combinedwith The Dukays efforts and saw it peak at #69 on the album chart.

A regular on the Louisiana Hayride from 1958, Bruce Channel first recorded for LeCam Records, a label set upfor him by Major Bill Smith in Fort Worth, Texas.When the record began to attract local interest, Mercury Records stepped in to snap up the record and Bruce fortheir Smash imprint. The single became a huge hit, topping the US chart for three weeks, prompting Smash tosend Bruce into the studio to record an accompanying album.Whilst such hastily recorded albums usually consist of one hit and eleven or so fillers, this bucks the trend, beinga cohesive effort, complete with additional tracks that became hit singles in their own right.
