Whilst New Juke Box Hits is considered a good rock and roll album, it is not considered one of his better efforts,with Chuck covering material from several other artists and writers and coming up with no hits himself.The simple fact is that whilst recording this album, Chuck was pre-occupied with legal wrangles that would ultimately see him jailed in 1962 on pretty much trumped up charges.Despite this, there is still much to enjoy, with Chucks performance holding the same consistency as earlier efforts.

Jiles Richardson first came to prominence as a disk jockey on KTRM in Beaumont, Texas, becoming a full time jockey upon quitting college in 1949. Aside from a two year period spent in the armed forces, Jiles continued making a name as a disk jockey, writing songs as something of a hobby. One of these, Running Bear, he gave to a friend, Johnny Preston, who would eventually top the charts in September 1959. Jiles own recording career began in 1957, when he adopted the name Big Bopper and recorded Beggar To A King. It was his second single, Chantilly Lace, that broke big, prompting Jiles to take a temporary leave of absence from KTRM in order to tour withBuddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Dion & The Belmonts on the Winter Dance Party in January and February 1959. The logistics of the tour were such that there were vast distances between several of the dates, and on one such journey, between Clear Lake, Iowa and Moorhead, Minnesota, Buddy Holly suggested chartering a plane to cover the 380 miles. Jiles persuaded Waylon Jennings to give up his seat on the plane as Jiles had flu, a decision that was ultimately to cost him his life.Quite how big a performer he would have gone on to become is open to debate, but the songs on this album suggest he couldhave rivalled even Buddy Holly.

Strange as it may seem, Time Out was not that highly regarded when it first got released. Indeed, CBS chief Goddard Leiberson often stated that he took something of a chance in agreeing to release it and initial reviews were not entirely complimentary. Slowly but surely, however, Time Out picked up support, mainly from the buying public, who propelled the album to the #2 spot in the US and subsequently onto becoming the best selling jazz album of the year.
