31 - CLARK, SONNY
- BLUES IN THE NIGHT - (LP) DOXY
180 gram LP. Although Sonny Clark was just 31 years old when he passed away, he still managed to carve out his place in history as one of jazz musics top pianists. Blues In The Night, recorded in December 1958 for Blue Note, was a trio session featuring Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Wes Landers on drums. Blues In The Night is an extremely rare LP that was shelved until 1979, when it finally released as part of the Japanese Blue Note series by King Records. It has since also been released on CD, but it has never been reissued on vinyl. The session finds the piano trio playing an array of standard tunes that were originally intended for release as jukebox singles. The final track, "Gee Baby, Aint I Good To You (alt. take)", recorded in November 1958, was taken from Sonny Clarks Art Of The Trio session, also recorded at the Van Gelder studio, and featuring Jymie Merritt instead of Paul Chambers on bass.

32 - COCHRAN, EDDIE
- EDDIE COCHRAN - (L+C) DOXY
180 gram LP + CD. Rockabilly icon, Eddie Cochran, best known for his "Summertime Blues", embodied the rebellious spirit of American teens, who in the 1950s, were in the middle of a cultural revolution. Cochran, a teenager himself when his first hit, "Sittin In the Balcony", was released in 1956, was an extremely talented (and good-looking) musician, on the cusp of major stardom when he was suddenly killed in a car accident at the age of 21. Despite his early demise, this collection of hits only confirms Cochrans role as one of rock musics greatest architects.

33 - COLEMAN, ORNETTE
- TOMORROW IS THE QUESTION - (LP) DOXY
Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1930, Ornette Coleman began playing alto sax in 1944 and tenor soon after, and is almost entirely self-taught. From the beginning Coleman chose the path less traveled, concerning himself with pitch and melody and trying to extract qualities of the human voice with his horn. The result was a sound in jazz that no one had ever heard before, sparking the "free jazz" revolution, which soon became one of its major currents. Despite an early lack of comprehension over what Coleman was doing, the titles of his early albums suggest that Coleman himself knew exactly how his music would influence the jazz world (Tomorrow Is the Question, Something Else), it was just a question of time. This, Colemans second album, recorded in 1959 in Los Angeles was produced by one of Colemans early supporters, Lester Koenig of the great Contemporary Records, and features Don Cherry on trumpet, Percy Heath / Red Mitchell on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. It was during this time that Colemans career began to take off, thanks in part to John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet who got Coleman and Cherry spots at the School of Jazz in Lenox, Massachusetts. This same year Coleman recorded his watershed album "The Shape of Jazz to Come".

34 - COLTRANE, JOHN
- A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOHN COLTRANE - (LP) DOXY
Recorded July 11, 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, this album is aptly named "A Day in the Life of John Coltrane" because the entire contents of this double album were recorded in a single day. Originally available only on three separate LPs, this quintet session (featuring a hard-hitting Chambers-Cobb-Garland rhythm section) captures Coltrane at the top of his game, although he plays no original material. Coming to prominence in the mid-fifties as Miles Davis' sideman, Coltrane's own star quickly ascended (recorded just 9 months after his genre-busting "Blue Train" for Blue Note) and for a brief time burned brightly, hard to believe just 9 years later he'd be dead. Track listing - Side A: 1.Spring Is Here 2. Invitation Side B: 1. Im A Dreamer Arent We All 2. Love Thy Neighbor Side C: 1. Dont Take Your Love From Me 2. My Ideal Side D: 1. Stardust 2. Ill Get By

35 - COLTRANE, JOHN
- AFRICA/BRASS - (L+C) DOXY
180 gram LP + CD with 2 bonus tracks. Coltranes 1961 album for the fledgling Impulse! label explores African rhythms along with some of the most unusual instrumentation in jazz (his classic quartet is backed here by a 15-piece brass band)! This expanded reissue also features Cal Masseys "The Damned Dont Cry" and "Song Of The Underground Railroad", both recorded during the original sessions but not included on the album. Bonus CD features an alternate version of "Africa" as well as Coltranes own, far superior, arrangement for "Greensleeves". Hearing is believing!

36 - COLTRANE, JOHN
- COLTRANE PLAYS THE BLUES - (L+C) DOXY
MONO LP on 180 gram HQ vinyl with one bonus track + a bonus STEREO CD of the same album with four alternate bonus tracks.Recorded on 24 October 1960 in NYC, Coltrane Plays The Blues is perhaps a misleading title for this album as Coltrane is not so much playing the blues as bringing the feeling of blues into the idiom of jazz. This memorable album, featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Steve Davis on bass, hails from Coltranes first period as leader of his own quartet, and finds Coltrane playing then highly unusual soprano sax on two numbers-"Blues To Bechet", a pianoless tribute to the great Sydney Bechet, and "Mr. Syms", where McCoy Tyner is given the opportunity to really show his stuff, which he does masterfully. Includes "Exotica" (also recorded during this session) as a bonus track + 4 more bonus alternate tracks on the CD.

- MY FAVORITE THINGS - (L+C) DOXY
180 gram LP + bonus CD of the album. Anyone looking for proof that John Coltranes exhalted status is so deserved need only to glance at the amount of time this album took to record. In just three days (Oct 24 - 26, 1960), Coltrane managed to almost effortlessly produce this milestone of modern jazz, and the impeccable Jones/ Tyner/ Davis line up that supports Coltrane solos ("But Not For Me") give the entire session the feeling that we are experiencing pure genius.

38 - COLTRANE, JOHN
- THE COMPLETE NIGHTS OF 1-2 NOV. 1961 - (LP) DOXY
140 gram 3LP BOX SET with 4-page booklet. Now available for the first time ever on vinyl, the complete recordings of John Coltranes historic and hotly contested live performances at the Village Vanguard on the nights of 1-2 November 1961 with a 4-page booklet! This historic LP was not only Coltranes first live album (and his first recording to feature the complete line-up of his now legendary quartet featuring McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison), but it was also, at the time, one of the most criticized residencies in the history of jazz. In November 1961, these performances (also featuring Eric Dolphy) represented jazz musics supreme cutting edge-with Coltrane beginning to experiment with Eastern music, represented in numbers like India and instruments like the oud-but it was one that critics were largely unwilling to embrace. In fact, they began filling newspapers with vehement anti-Coltrane sentiment, and some even went so far as to call him downfall of jazz! 39 - COLTRANE, JOHN
- TRANE OF AUGUST '57 - (LP) DOXY
Recorded in 1957, a young Coltrane joins Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor for an inspired showcasing of three Trane originals amid a ballad by Alonzo Levister and a revved up version of Irving Berlin's "Soft Lights And Sweet Music". Although Coltrane had only started recording a few years earlier, his style had already come into its own and, particularly on his originals like the bonus track "Slowtrane", it is interesting to hear how Coltrane manages to break into and impose himself on one of the tightest rhythm sections in jazz, giving listeners a fleeting glimpse of what Trane had in store for the future. 40 - COLTRANE, JOHN
- WELLS FARGO - (LP) DOXY
These recordings from March 13, 1958 see a 32-year-old John Coltrane playing an obscure date with little known jazz trumpeter / flugelhorn player, Wilbur Harden. These recordings made at the legendary Van Gelder studios also include Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums (while the 2 bonus tracks feature Curtis Fuller on trombone, Ali Jackson on bass, Howard Williams on piano, and Arthur Taylor on drums). The immensely talented, but equally obscure Harden appeared on several Yusef Lateef and Curtis Fuller records for Savoy as well as leading his own sessions in the late fifties, only to drop out of the jazz scene entirely by 1960 due to health problems (and finally pass away in 1969). In fact, Harden was a great composer and a pioneer on the flugelhorn and all the tracks on this album are Harden compositions. Coltrane, as history has shown, fared much better, and during this period was just on the cusp of super-stardom. He was busy playing around NYC with Thelonious Monk, and had recently rejoined the Miles Davis sextet, and it would not be long before Coltrane would begin leading his own sessions, soon becoming a household name in jazz. 2 bonus tracks previously not included in the original album. Tracks - Side A: 1. Wells Fargo 2. E.F.F.P.H. 3. Rhodamagnetics 4. Count Down Side B: 1. West 42nd Street 2. Snuffy 3. Anedac (bonus) 4. B.J. (bonus)

41 - COLTRANE/FLANAGAN/BURRELL
- THE CATS - (LP) DOXY
1957 may have been a watershed year for jazz, but this session, recorded for Prestige on April 18 at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio in NJ, was still a cut above the rest. While Coltrane may be the big name draw here, this session was actually led by pianist Tommy Flanagan, who would go on to be Ella Fitzgeralds accompanist in the sixties, and appear on a number of historic jazz sessions including Coltranes Giant Steps, and Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus. In fact, every composition on this album was written by Flanagan, except for Gershwins "How Long Has This Been Going On?", performed here in trio form. Also features some truly superlative trumpet playing by Idrees Sulieman, best known for his association with Coleman Hawkins.

This LP, originally released in 1959, features 11 songs famously recorded by Lady Day during the course of her brilliant career. When asked why he wanted to do this album, Cooke simply replied, "She was, and still is, the greatest that ever lived for my money," no small praise from a man who himself ruled the charts with over 30 Top 40 hits from 1957 until his death at age 33 in 1964.

44 - CURTIS, KING
- THE NEW SCENE OF KING CURTIS - (LP) DOXY
180 gram LP. Recorded in 1960 in the Rudy Van Gelder studio, this amazing session is a rare example of the legendary R&B saxophonist King Curtis playing in a jazz setting. Although Curtis is best known for his work on seminal early sides like the Coasters "Yakety Yak", and as a backing musician for the likes of Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett, Curtis proves here that his immense talent was not limited by genre. Featuring Nat Adderley on trumpet, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Oliver Jackson on drums, Curtis plays four original compositions and the standard "Willow Weep For Me", and while this session is not necessarily groundbreaking, it still represents some of the best jazz of the era!

- DIGGIN' WITH THE MILES DAVIS SEXTET - (LP) DOXY
180 grams vinyl;Originally released as the Prestige 10" Dig, it was later reissued as a 12" with additional tracks. The Diggin' title comes from a later reissue, which was supposed to fall in with the "Cookin'", "Steamin'", "Workin'", etc. series. This album actually has nothing to do with that later period, but it is a still a very good representation of an early Miles at his best, forging ahead with his own cool bop style. This sextet features Davis on trumpet, a young Jackie McLean on alto sax (his debut recording), Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Walter Bishop Jr. on piano, Tommy Potter or Charles Mingus on bass and Art Blakey on drums. 46 - DAVIS, MILES
- IN PERSON, FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE BLACKHAWK - (LP) DOXY
180 gram 2LP. Now for the first time ever on double LP, In Person, Friday Night at the Blackhawk represents a very short-lived and little-known version of the Miles Davis Quintet, recorded live at San Franciscos famed Blackhawk jazz club on 21 April 1961! After losing John Coltrane to his own soon-to-be legendary quartet, Miles Davis tried out a several other tenors before finally managing to bring on Hank Mobley. Mobley, who initially gained notoriety with the Jazz Messengers, was a less aggressive (though not less in any other way) player than Coltrane, bringing an interesting new dynamic to the Quintet. The flawless rhythm section of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums, had been backing Miles since the days of Kind Of Blue and was, by the time of this recording, a well-oiled and lethal machine. This double LP of Friday Night at the Blackhawk, while not technically complete in the sense that no doubles are included, includes at least one version of every song that was played that night, and is by far the most complete version available on vinyl!

47 - DAVIS, MILES
- LIFT TO THE SCAFFOLD - (LP) DOXY
1958 film noir by the great Louis Malle, starring Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet. Not only was the film genre defining, but so was the soundtrack by Miles Davis, propelling the young player and composer forward into the type of modal jazz that would soon make history. Amazingly a 24-year-old Malle, who had not yet made a feature length film, but who was a huge jazz fan, intercepted Miles Davis at the airport and managed to convince him to make the music for the film. Miles Davis and his musicians, who included the Kenny Clarke on drums, as well as three French musicians, improvised this soundtrack in one night, from dusk to dawn, while watching the film and occasionally consulting with Malle. The film, which can be considered a precursor to the New Wave of French cinema won Malle the prestigious Louis Delluc prize and it can also be stated that the very spirit of jazz and the New Wave of French cinema are contained in this film and its soundtrack.

48 - DAVIS, MILES
- MILES DAVIS QUARTET - (LP) DOXY
180 grams vinyl; This album is composed of three different sessions. The first session (Side A) was recorded at WOR Studios in NYC in May of 1953 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, John Lewis on piano, Charlie Mingus on bass and piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Max Roach on drums, while the second session (all of side B, except for "I'll Remember April") was recorded at NYC's Beltone studios in March 1954 and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. "I'll Remember April" was recorded on a third session the following month at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Dave Schildkraut on alto saxophone, Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. All three sessions hail from Davis' "Prestige period" which stretched from 1951-1955 and during which time Davis had developed an addiction to heroin. However, according to some sources it was precisely between the recording of the first two sessions that appear here that Davis went back home to St. Louis to get clean. He was largely successful, and so this album marks a major turning point in Davis' career.Track listing - Side A: 1. When Lights Are Low 2. Tune-Up 3. Miles Ahead 4. Smooch Side B: 1. Four 2. 49 - DAVIS, MILES
- MILESIN - (LP) DOXY
On May 11 and October 26, 1956 the Miles Davis Quintet, featuring John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and "Philly" Joe Jones on drums, went into the studio to record two mammoth sessions in the Rudy Van Gelder studio. This studio time resulted in four legendary hard bop albums: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. For these sessions the quintet simply played their live set straight through, as if they were playing at a club. One take. Thats it. And as a result, these albums are as close as anyone (who wasn't there) will ever come to knowing what the one of the most memorable jazz combos in history must have sounded like live. The incredible tension between all five musicians shines through-Miles' poised and sparing trumpet in stark contrast with Coltranes more urgent and note heavy sax, backed by one of the best rhythm sections in jazz-and the studio banter that can be heard makes it feel like you are in a stage-side seat. Interestingly, there is very little original material, but what we do have is a glimpse straight into the heart of what was popular in jazz music at the time. Because of the unique way in which these albums were recorded, it is only fitting that they be brought together in one package, and on vinyl as nature intended. Now they have also been remastered by the original sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder himself.

50 - DAVIS, MILES
- SKETCHES OF SPAIN - (LP) DOXY
180 gram DMM LP (45rpm) audiophile HQ virgin vinyl - ltd. ed.500 copies. For 1960s Sketches Of Spain Davis pairs up with composer Gil Evans and a 19-piece band to produce what has been called one of the most difficult scores in jazz music. But Davis makes even the most difficult of music sound absolutely effortless presenting some of the most dramatic and breathtakingly brooding solos of his career. Said one critic: "It is as if Miles had been born of Andalusian gypsies but, instead of picking up the guitar, had decided to make a trumpet the expression of his cante hondo (deep song)".

51 - DEARIE, BLOSSOM
- GIVE HIM THE OHH-LA-LA - (LP) DOXY
In the era of the Marilyn Monroe blond bombshell, Blossom Dearie was quietly driving men just as wild by being the innocently sexy girl-next-door. Her almost childlike voice is both unforgettable and uniquely recognizable and she has a way of captivating listeners in a way that only truly great singers can. The aptly titled, "Give Him the Ooh La La", recorded in 1957 for Verve, was Dearies first release after returning home to NY after gaining popularity on the Paris vocal jazz scene, and is definitely one of her best. Here she sings standards like "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and Cole Porters "Just One of Those Things", as well as some more surprisingly obscure material from her day, like "They Say Its Spring", "I Walk a Little Faster" and "The Riviera", two Cy Coleman tunes. She also sings "Plus je TEmbrasse", in tribute to her days spent in Paris and also does her own piano accompaniment throughout.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Just One Of Those Things 02. Like Someone In Love 03. Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea 04. They Say It's Spring 05. Try Your Wings 06. Bang Goes The Drum (and You're In Love) 07. The Riviera 08. The Middle Of Love 09. Plus Je T'embrasse 10. Give Him The Ooh-la-la 11. Let Me Love You 12. I Walk A Little Faster

52 - DONEGAN, LONNIE
- SHOWCASE - (LP) DOXY
Reissue of Lonnie's debut album from 1956, on Pye Records, that made him "the Man" in England (to quote Paul McCartney). In that year in England he was not only England's premier bluesman, but was also one of the first rock'n'roll stars in the mode of Elvis Presley. He had invented a new style of music, skiffle, and every teenager in Britain was racing out to the record shops to snap up anything the man recorded, and were all buying guitars to be in a skiffle band.

53 - ELLINGTON, DUKE
- ANATOMY OF A MURDER - (LP) DOXY
Duke Ellingtons original soundtrack to Otto Premingers 1959 classic courtroom drama, Anatomy Of A Murder, called "the best trial movie of all time", and based on a best-selling novel written by Robert Traver (aka Supreme Court Justice John D. Voelker who based the book on a 1952 murder case). Although this was not Ellingtons first film score, it was his first score for a major all-star motion picture. The film stars Jimmy Stewart, George C. Scott, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, and Arthur O'Connell and features Ellington himself, playing a character named "Pie-Eye". Like all soundtracks, Ellingtons focus here is to punctuate the action of the film, but nonetheless many of the tracks, particularly "Flirtibird" (featuring alto sax player Johnny Hodges), "Happy Anatomy" (featuring trumpet player Clark Terry and tenor sax player Paul Gonsalves) and "Midnight Indigo" stand well alongside Ellingtons other music from this period.
TRACKLISTING: 01. Main Title And Anatomy Of A Murder (featuring Jimmy Hamilton, Ray Nance) 02. Flirtibird (featuring Johnny Hodges) 03. Way Early Subtone (featuring Russell Procope) 04. Hero To Zero (featuring Harry Carney, Paul Gonsalves) 05. Low Key Lightly (featuring Ray Nance) 06. Happy Anatomy (featuring Clark Terry, Paul Gonsalves) 07. Midnight Indigo 08. 54 - EVANS, BILL
- EVERYBODY DIGS BILL EVANS - (LP) DOXY
Recorded in 1958 for Riverside, this was Evans' second album as leader, recorded shortly after he had officially left Miles Davis' legendary sextet and just before he returned to the sextet to record the era-defining "Kind Of Blue". Miles took a lot of flack for giving his piano slot to a white musician when there were plenty of talented black pianists out there, but Miles Davis was not interested in getting a good pianist, he wanted an exceptional pianist, and that is exactly what Evans was. Like Miles Davis, Evans became the standard by which other jazz musicians measured their own playing, and now there is hardly a jazz piano player around that can say that he has not in some way been influenced by "the Evans style of playing". With fellow Davis sideman Philly Joe Jones on drums, and Dizzy Gillespie's bass man, Sam Jones, on the bass, this trio album captures Evans at a critical moment in his career, having proven himself to peers and critics alike (as the cover testifies -with high praise from Davis, Ahmad Jamal, George Shearing and Cannonball Adderley), not only this is a much more confident and personal album than his first one, but it documents a totally new style of jazz piano playing that went on to influence generations to come. The album includes three originals, including the acclaimed "Peace Piece", along with Sonny Rollins' "Oleo", also a favorite of Davis at the time, Cole Porter's "Lucky to Be Me", and Gigi Gryce's "Minority", among others. Also featured "Some Other Time" as bonus track.Track listing - Side A: 1. Minority 2. Young and Foolish 3. Lucky to Be Me 4. Night and Day 5. Epilogue Side B: 1. Tenderly 2. Peace Piece 3. What Is There to Say? 4. Oleo 5. Epilogue 6. Some Other Time (bonus)

56 - EVANS, BILL -TRIO-
- WALTZ FOR DEBBY - (LP) DOXY
180 gram DMM LP (45rpm) audiophile HQ virgin vinyl. Recorded live at The Village Vanguard in New York on June 25, 1961, this was the fourth album by the Bill Evans Trio, composed of pianist Bill Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian. Scott LaFaro was one of the supreme jazz bassists, a virtuoso player whose playing changed the very conception of his instrument. This album unfortunately also represents one of LaFaros last performances, recorded just days before his tragic death at the age of 25 by automobile accident. Interestingly the album also contains tracks that Evans had recorded prior to working with LaFaro, so that this recording provides a very accurate index of the bassists great contribution to the trio.

57 - EVANS, GIL -ORCHESTRA-
- OUT OF THE COOL - (LP) DOXY
180 gram DMM gatefold LP with inside pocket. Originally released in 1960, this album is widely considered to be Evans' masterpiece, on par with Duke Ellington in terms of orchestration, and essential listening for any jazz fan. Evans had spent the previous few years recording with Miles Davis on such acclaimed works as Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess and Sketches Of Spain, a collaboration which proved to be extremely enriching for both men. This LP was Evans first post-Miles recording, and the albums title, Out Of The Cool, is an obvious nod to that fact (a play on Davis own Birth Of The Cool). The album showcases two significant Evans compositions, the groundbreaking "La Nevada" and "Sunken Treasure".

59 - FELDMAN, MORTON/EARLE BROWN
- FELDMAN, MORTON/EARLE BROWN - (LP) DOXY
Finally back in print! This rare Morton Feldman / Earle Brown split LP was originally released in 1962 on the small NY-based Time Records and features Feldmans "Durations I-IV" on side A and Browns "Hodograph I", "Music for Violin, Cello and Piano" and "Music for Cello and Piano" on side B. David Tudor is featured on piano throughout. Feldman and Brown, who were both interested in non-traditional systems of notation and improvisation, were very closely aligned with the "New York School", a group of avant-garde composers in the 1950s and 60s that included John Cage, David Tudor and Christian Wolff. These composers applied to music many of the same ideas and experiments that visual artists, like Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, were applying to painting.
